Prologue
I believe in ghosts. They're the ones who haunt us, the ones who have left us behind. Many times in my life I have felt them around me, observing, witnessing, when no one in the living world knew or cared what happened.
  I am ninety-one years old, and almost everyone who was once in my life is now a ghost.

My Tuesday Intro pick is Jill Shalvis' latest, It had to Be You. Many of you know that I'm crazy about this author. I am truly looking forward to going back to Lucky Harbor!

Some things were set in stone. The sun would rise every morning, the tide would come in and out without fail, and a girl needed to check herself out in the mirror before a date no matter the obstacle. To that end, Ali Winters climbed up on the toilet seat to get a full view of herself in the tiny bathroom mirror of the flower shop where she worked. Ducking so that she didn't hit her head on the low ceiling, she took in her reflection. Not bad from the front, she decided, and carefully spun around to catch the hind view of herself in her vintage--aka thrift store--little black dress.

My Tuesday Intro pick is from Maya Banks KGI Novel, The Darkest Hour. I've been wanting to read something written by Maya for a while and thought this action-packed romance would be one I could enjoy!

He'd hoped if he drank enough the night before he'd sleep right through today. Instead his eyes popped open at eight a.m., and sunlight promptly fried his retinas.
  Ethan Kelly threw an arm over his face and lay there as the reality of the day hit him square in the gut.
  June 16.
  He could say something incredibly corny like...June 16, the day his world irrevocably changed. June 16, the day everything went to hell. Truth was, it had done that long before.

My Tuesday Intro pick is The Apple Orchard. I accepted this one for review because the story really captured my imagination. I think this one is going to be a great read!!

Prologue
Archangel, California
  The air smelled of apples, and the orchard hummed with the sound of bees hovering over the bushels of harvested fruit. The trees were in prime condition, waiting for the harvest workers to arrive. The branches had been pruned in readiness for the ladders, the last pesky groundhog had been trapped and carted away; the roads between the trees had been graded smooth so the fruit wouldn't be jostled in transport. The morning was cool with a mist hanging among the branches, The sun, ripe on the eastern horizon of the rolling hills, offered the promise of warmth later in the day. My Tuesday Intro pick is from, The One I Left Behind,  a NetGalley book that caught my interest the other night as I was browsing through my titles trying to decide which one to read next. The first paragraph is chilling and scary...I couldn't stop reading!!!

It began with the hands. Right hands, severed neatly at the wrist. They arrived on the granite steps of the police station in empty red and white milk cartons stapled closed at the top, photos of missing children on the back--the whole package wrapped in brown butcher's paper, tied neatly with thin string like a box of pastry.

Prologue- A cottage in the English countryside April 18, 1803

The old woman's hand trembled as she clutched her teacup. Out of breath, she hadn't stopped to wash the dirt from under her nails. She hovered over the stove, waiting for the teakettle to whistle as she eyed the wound on her finger, still raw. She'd clumsily cut it on the edge of the garden shears, and it throbbed beneath the bloodstained bandage. She's tend to it later. Now she needed to come to her senses.

My husband wasn't in bed with me when I woke up that January morning. The mid-winter sky was bruised purple and yellow outside the window. I shut bleary eyes against light that glared and pounded.  A second later I realized my toes weren't burrowing into the hollows behind Brendan's knees, that when I flung out my arm it didn't meet his wiry chest, the stony muscles gone slack with sleep. I slid my hand toward the night table, fingers scrabbling around for our alarm clock. Seven-thirty. It was late. As if drugged, my brain was making sense of things only after a dull delay. But it was full hour past the time I always woke up. We always woke up. Brendan slept a cop's sleep, perpetually ready to take action, and I had been an early riser all my thirty-five years.

Working in such close quarters with a woman that you could bump knees (thighs, and maybe even other body parts) was probably every man's dream job. Except Dot Morrison's knees were knobby and she was old enough to be Jonathan Templar's grandmother. And she looked like Maxine of greeting card fame. So there was no knee (or anything else) bumping going on today.

My Tuesday Intros pick is, Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts. I came across this author after reading a Trisha Ashley book during the holidays. I love Brit Chick Lit and who can resist this cover??? Not me! I decided to include the second paragraph because the first one really didn't point the reader in any direction.

  When February started, Rachel Fielding had a middling-to-glamorous career doing PR for internet companies, a boyfriend who regularly bought her flowers and dressed better than she did, a cleaner, and a skin-age three years younger than her actual age, which was thirty-nine.

My Tuesday Intro Pick is John Shors newest release, Temple of a Thousand Faces. I read Cross Currents a few years ago and it the story still resonates with me today. I can't wait to dive into this book later this month!!

Angkor, Late Monsoon Season, 1177
  The temple of Angkor Wat had been designed to house the Hindu Gods but looked as if it had been built by them. Rising from the top of the massive, terraced temple were five towers shaped like lotus buds, the central and tallest of which stretched upward for two hundred feet. These towers symbolized the peaks of Mount Meru, the core of the Hindu universe, where the Gods resided and from where all creation sprang. The wide, square moat surrounding Angkor Wat represented the cosmic ocean, and the walls near the moat were meant to remind Hindus of the mountain ranges at the distant edges of the world.

Prologue

Some nights if I'm sleeping on my own, I still dream about Whitehorn House. In the dream it's always spring, cool fine light with a late-afternoon haze. I climb the worn stone steps and knock on the door--that great brass knocker, going black with age and heavy enough to startle you every time--and an old woman with an apron and a deft, uncompromising face lets me in. Then she hangs the big rusted key back on her belt and walks away down the drive, under the falling cherry blossom, and I close the door behind her.

My pick this week is Mr. Churchill's Secretary. I'm participating in the TLC Book Tour of the second book in Maggie Hope series, Princess Elizabeth's Spy, and TLC and the publisher were kind enough to send the first book. I hate reading out-of-order so it was very nice of them to send me two books!! I'm in love with the cover art and can't wait to get to this story!

  Prologue

    Half an hour before Diana Snyder died, she tidied up her desk in the typists' office of the Cabinet War Rooms.

   She looked up at the heavy black hands of the clock on the wall and sighed. There were no windows in the War Rooms, the underground lair used by the Prime Minister's staff, reinforced by concrete slabs and considered to be bombproof. The ceilings were low; signs warned Mind Your Head. The once-white walls had faded to dull yellow, and the floors were covered in worn brown linoleum. Overhead were lines of drainage pipes from the Treasury. While the air was filtered by a special ventilation system, there were still lingering odors of floor wax, chemical toilets, and cigarette smoke.
