What Thinking of You is about:
Ginny Holland’s daughter Jem has headed off to university, leaving single mum Ginny with a severe case of empty-nest syndrome. To make matters worse, the first gorgeous man she's clapped eyes on in years has just accused Ginny of shoplifting. So Ginny decides to advertise for a lodger but what she gets is lovelorn Laurel, who can only talk about her ex-boyfriend. Jill Mansell has never let me down and she delivers once again with a light and entertaining read that had me laughing and smiling from beginning to end. There were many things that I connected with Ginny about, one being home alone and the kiddies all grown. In a few short months my oldest will be over four hours away from me and it will be ever so hard to cut the cord (for me, not for him!). I loved how brave Ginny became and took control of her life.

Recommend? If you have read and enjoyed Mansell's books in the past then I am sure you will like this one. It's not my favorite, but I still had a good time reading it. I thought the twist at the end was great!!!

'Dreaming of Mr. Darcy' by Victoria Connelly

Fledgling illustrator and Darcy fanatic Kay Ashton settles in the seaside town of Lyme to finish her book, The Illustrated Mr. Darcy, when a film company arrives to make a new adaptation of Persuasion. Kay is soon falling for the handsome bad boy actor playing Captain Wentworth, but it's the quiet screenwriter Adam Craig who has more in common with her beloved Mr. Darcy. Though still healing from a broken heart, Adam finds himself unexpectedly in love with Kay, but it will take more than good intentions to convince her that her real happy ending is with him.

First Thoughts after I finished: "That was completely adorable...bring me more!"

I thought this book was just what the doctor ordered. I was completely captivated by Lyme Regis and the idea of walking in the steps of my beloved author, Jane Austen. The idea of owning a B&B on the coast in England sounds like heaven to me so I immediately connected with the main character, Kay. She comes into some inheritance which allows her to realize some of her dreams. She's besotted with Austen's writing and obsessed with all things Darcy and Captain Wentworth (Persuasion). What could top off owning your own little piece of heaven? Having an adaptation of 'Persuasion' being filmed in Lyme and housing the stars from the film in your own little B&B....did I mention that she had a gorgeous leading man sleeping just a few doors down from her own room? I loved how the author took a little bit of Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Emma made it current and such a fun read! Reading this book has now inspired me to find out more about Lyme Regis, (did you know you can take a tour of Jane's Lyme?????? Sign me up now!) Austen's letters, and of course, to make Persuasion a must read for 2012. I must meet this dashing Captain Wentworth.

Is it possible that he could replace my Mr. Darcy????

'Miss Darcy Falls in Love' by Sharon Lathan

Noble young ladies were expected to play an instrument, but societal restrictions would have chafed for Georgiana Darcy, and accomplished musician. Her tour of Europe draws the reader into the musical life of the day, and a riveting love story of a young woman learning to direct her destiny and understand her own heart.

First thoughts after finishing this book:  To quote Georgiana,-"I am wildly and wantonly satisfied."

I'm really glad that I took the chance to read a Lathan book again. Earlier this year I read one of her books and felt the sex was the story and there really wasn't a plot. Well, I'm glad to say that I think the author has listened to her readers and pulled back on the over-the-top sex.  None of that really happens until the end of the book and it occurs exactly where and when it should. This time Sharon has taken the time to flesh out her characters and really bring them to life. I really enjoyed Georgiana's story and am thankful that Lathan decided to spend some time with this intriguing person.  One of the most unique features in this story is the how music is used. I loved how passionate Georgiana was about writing and playing her own original music. I also enjoyed experiencing France through the eyes of a young lady who is touring Europe during the Regency time period.  The beginning did start out a bit slow for me but after about 30 pages the story really took off and came to a very satisfying conclusion.


Recommend? For my fellow P&P variation readers, this is one that you MUST add to your reading list and/or stacks of books. You won't be disappointed and may end up with the same opinion as me- I want more books that feature the minor characters from Pride and Prejudice.

'Breaking the Code: a Father's Secret, a Daughter's Journey, and the Question That Changed Everything'

On his 81st birthday, without explanation, Karen Alaniz's father placed two weathered notebooks on her lap. Inside were more than 400 pages of letters he'd written to his parents during WWII. She began reading them, and the more she read, the more she discovered about the man she never knew and the secret role he played in WWII. They began to meet for lunch every week, for her to ask him questions, and him to provide the answers. And with painful memories now at the forefront of his thoughts, her father began to suffer, making their meetings as much about healing as discovery.

First thoughts after finishing this book: The quiet ones usually have the best stories to tell!

This book couldn't have been read at a better time with Veteran's Day being celebrated and with me watching Lisa Ling's latest installment of "Our America: Invisible Wounds of War." Both the book and the documentary left me with conflicting feelings and a heavy heart. Most of you know that my oldest is a Marine. I'm so very proud of his accomplishments to-date and for his service to our wonderful country. Yet, as I read this book and watched the documentary I realized that it all comes with a hefty price tag. The author's father never really talked about his experience during WWII so she was caught off-guard when he gave her several notebooks filled with the letters he penned to his parents while serving in Hawaii. Little did she know what reading those letters and then asking her father questions would set off. Her father at times would freely give her information, but more often than not he would become angry and deny taking part in any type of combat. Revisiting those letters caused him to come to terms with his grief, anger, hurt, and hopelessness over the images he witnessed and the covert operations that he was a part of. Back then they called it shell shock. Now we call it PTSD. The book made me sad at times and the documentary really reinforced to me what the author's father experienced. I have since then found myself at war with my own feelings about the military, serving our country, and the broken men and women that are coming home. An average of 18 veterans commit suicide daily....it is becoming an epidemic. And as a mother, I do not want my son to experience combat. I don't want my son to become hopeless. I don't want my son or anyone else's son or daughter to become a part of that statistic. I never really thought of those who came and fought before us...it's history, but this book made me realize that being a soldier then and now isn't really that much different. War is ugly and it leaves hideous scars on those that survive.

Recommend? I would highly recommend this book to those that have or had a family member who served and may have experienced combat. The author gave us glimpses into her father's world by highlighting some of his letters and then delving into certain incidences while having her weekly breakfast with her Dad. I loved reading his first-hand reports of Hawaii and I thought she really let his personality shine through this story. As each day ends we lose more and more of our WWII Vets....we need to get their stories down on paper before there is no one left to tell the tale.

'Tall, Dark and Cowboy' by Joanne Kennedy

What is this book about?

Stunned by the discovery that her lux lifestyle was funded by crime, runaway trophy wife Lacey Bradford is desperate to escape from her ex's criminal cronies and start a new life, so she heads west to find an old love. But rugged rancher Chase Caldwell has changed, hardened by bitterness and loss. First thoughts after finishing this book: "Um....can I find a vending machine filled with HOT cowboys?"

I love me some buff, hot, testosterone dripping, alpha male COWBOY! Was that bit over the top? Ha! Let me just say that this book was a great one to pick up after reading the emotionally draining Cross Currents. I was able to lose myself in Lacey and Chase's love story. I know that on more than one occasion I had that stupid look on my face that I get when I'm reading a very steamy love scene....and there were plenty of those in this book. But, I found them all to be right in line with the attraction between Lacey and Chase. It wasn't cheap sex...and it was very well written. There was more to the story than just what was going on between the sheets and that is why I really enjoyed this one.

Recommend? If you enjoy romance with brawny, sexy cowboys (who wouldn't..did you check out that cover?) and a good love story to boot (pun intended) then I would tell you to grab this one. Make sure that  you're reading it when no one else is around..I got busted two times during lunch reading this book. Both times my friend knew that I was reading a hot love scene. How you say? That stupid grin I get when the story is heating up and I'm loving the details! I'm going to read them all, but alone, locked in my room with no one around...except my husband! (insert devil grin!)


Rating: 8/10 (rating for excellent sex scenes and a story that kept me engaged)

'Mr. Darcy's Undoing' by Abigail Reynolds

Synopsis: Elizabeth accepts the proposal of a childhood friend before she meets Darcy again. When their paths cross, the devastated Mr. Darcy must decide how far he’ll go to win the woman he loves. First thoughts after finishing: "Oh Mr. Darcy.......you married the wrong woman!"

Yes, I know...there I go again about Mr.Darcy! I can't help it though.....this book has some scorching bedroom scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth and I swear my cheeks were burning up and I know for a fact that I had that stupid "I can't believe he did that!" grin on my face. Oh well, what is a Darcy lover to do?

What I liked:

• Solid, well-written story
• Loved the idea of Elizabeth becoming engaged to another man, therefore, leaving Darcy bewildered and brokenhearted.
• The sex scenes..oh, wait I already said that!!

What I didn't like:

• I wanted the author to take the story about Elizabeth's engagement further. The ending of the engagement seemed too abrupt and I feel it could've added to the story if she actually had Lizzy marry him and then maybe he dies somehow and Elizabeth feels so guilty that she shuns Darcy for years....oops, I'm getting carried away.
• I honestly thought the book was about 50 pages too long. I was starting to get a bit tired of the story. There were some pages that really didn't add to the story.
• I thought I would scream if Darcy called Elizabeth his, "My best beloved" one more damn time!

Recommend? For those that love Darcy and enjoy reading the P&P variations, AND don't mind a few steamy sex scenes....this is a good read!

'Mr. Darcy's Bite' by Mary Lydon Simonsen

I don't really like this cover very well..Mr. Darcy looks creepy instead of HOT !

Synopsis:

First thoughts when I finished the last sentence: "That was a fun, different twist on P&P with a werewolf thrown in for good measure!"

It goes without saying that I'm a sucker for Mr. Darcy...well, I found out that I also like him when he's a werewolf too!!! This story was just fun and I'm glad that the author didn't take the "werewolf" thing too far, otherwise it would've felt very cliche. I thought it was just right and added that little twist to the story that made it enjoyable.

  "You are shivering. I am sorry it is not warmer in here."
  Lizzy stood up and put her arms around her husband's neck and pulled his face to hers. "Why don't you warm me up the same way you did last night?"

Recommend? Sure...especially to those that adore Darcy and Lizzy's story as much as I do. It's always fun to shake up Austen's world and to read about this couple in different settings and situations!!

1.) Reasons you chose this book

I read and absolutely LOVED her book, The Winter Sea. When I found out that she was publishing a new book, I swear I did a Snoopy happy dance and immediately said YES to Sourcebooks when they offered a review copy.

2.) Reasons you liked or disliked this book

This book was a wonderful read for me. I love the way the author weaves the past and the present. I also find her use of time travel extremely well done and honestly, not far-fetched. Many people believe that ley lines are spirit paths which allow people to travel from one time to another and there are many of them throughout the world. I found this article very informational and interesting to read about these ancient lines. This book was also incredibly romantic and falling in love with the characters was an easy thing to do! Another huge draw for me was the setting of the book in Cornwall. I swear I must have some sort of ancestral lineage from that area because I'm drawn to it instantly and often dream of living there. 

3.) Reasons you are recommending this book

If you enjoy a great story with real, genuine characters and setting that you can envision in your mind just from the author's descriptive writing, then I strongly urge you to add this book to your stacks. This will be going on my top 10 books for sure and I'm keeping my copy to read again!! 'Utterly Charming' by Kristine Grayson

First thoughts when I finished: "Not what I was hoping for."

I read Wickedly Charming earlier this year and loved it, so when Sourcebooks was offering another Grayson book I just had to read it. What I've gathered since finishing the book is that she wrote Utterly Charming way back in 2000. Why is this relevant? Because she wrote Wickedly Charming eleven years later and boy has her writing skills improved. I'm very glad that I read her later work first because if I had started with Utterly Charming I might not pick up another book written by her. This story just lacked charm. The charm that drew me to Wickedly Charming was nonexistent in this book. I never really felt that I was in a 'fractured fairy-tale' and the whole premise, once I was knee-deep in the book just never came to fruition. I didn't find Prince Charming irresistible and honestly, I didn't really care for the main character Nora in the least. The story revolved around legalities of fairyland versus the real world and it bored me to tears! I found myself skimming the last third of the book, which is never a good thing!

Recommend?   I have every confidence that her later works are better than the one I just finished so I would read this author again but I would hesitate to recommend this one to my friends. Instead, I would direct you to Wickedly Charming which was everything I wanted and more!

I'm a huge fan of King Arthur legends and that is why I wanted to read this one.

2.) Reasons you liked or disliked this book

I liked it just fine, however, I really feel that I did a disservice to myself by not reading the first book in the series. I will however, remedy that situation one of these days and then re-read this one!

I enjoyed reading the story of Sir Gawain and how he became a part of Arthur's noble warriors. 

3.) Reasons you are recommending this book

I would recommend this book to anyone that loves the tales of King Arthur, Guinevere, Sir Lancelot, and Morgaine (Morgawse) . I'm always looking for that book that will top Mists of Avalon or Mary Stewart's Arthurian Saga. This one doesn't ,but I did enjoy spending time in that world again.

'To the Moon and Back' by Jill Mansell

First thought after I finished the last page: "When is Jill writing her next book? I love her and this book!"

Why I loved this book: If not for Sourcebooks, I'm not sure I would have read a Jill Mansell novel. I have to say in all honesty, that this has been one of my highlights reviewing for Sourcebooks.....Mansell delivers book after book. And this one is my favorite to date. I don't know how Mansell does it, but she makes me LOVE and CARE about her characters. Maybe she sprinkles fairy dust on each and every page? Whatever it is, she has that special gift of drawing her readers into her story and keeping you riveted until the very end.

Ellie is a special young woman, who will stay with me for some time to come. I could feel my heart breaking along with hers when she finds out that the love of her life, Jamie, has died from injuries sustained in a car accident. I absolutely understood her grief, guilt, and inability to move on with her life. And even though Jamie has died, the reader is still able to connect with him and get to know him as Ellie talks to him daily.

Recommend?  YES! I know the synopsis sounds sad and with any other author it just might be depressing. But Jill handles the topics of young widowhood, coming to terms with the loss of a loved one, and survivor's guilt wonderfully. There's pretty much everything you could want in this book.....love, heartbreak, laughter, hope, and a great cast of characters!

That first sentence totally drew me into the story and I knew right away that Sorcha was going to be a cheeky lass that I would like very much. This is the final installment in the Regency Vampire series and it was a perfect way to finish the vampire's tales. I loved the setting, characters, and the entire story. I think out of all of the vampires I found myself loving Alec the best. He had that vulnerable side to him and he let his guard down more than once with Sorcha. I enjoyed how she had her heart set on "owning" a lycan (werewolf) ...it cracks me up to think she really wanted a wolf and not exactly the man! But I can't blame her there, as I certainly love my dogs by my side and the added benefits of them over let's say.....my husband! (they can't talk, have very few demands, and making dinner for the dogs is very easy!)

Recommend? Easily! This is a fun, engaging, and well-written romance trilogy. If you're looking for a book where you can just kick back, relax and let your imagination take over, then this one fits the bill!!!
