What The Likeness is about:
Cassie Maddox return to unravel a case even more sinister and enigmatic than the first. Six months after the events of In the Woods, an urgent telephone call beckons Cassie to a grisly crime scene. The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used. Suddenly, Cassie must discover not only who killed this girl, but, more importantly, who is this girl?
Wow! Tana French is blowing my socks off, people!! Her story drew me in and never relinquished its hold on me until the very last page. There were moments that I did have to suspend belief only in the fact that Cassie and Lexie looked and acted so much alike that none of her friends questioned whether it was her or not???!! Beyond that little quibble, there was nothing else that kept this book from being a 5-star read for me. French creates an atmosphere that has the hairs on my neck standing up on end.
Recommend? Hell, yeah!

I too love Tana French and love her writing, but in this one, I was not able to suspend belief that Cassie's friends wouldn't know the difference. Maybe if it turned out they had been twins separated at birth?
ReplyDeleteTHE LIKENESS is one of my all time favorite books! Time for a reread, I think!
ReplyDeleteI read only one of her books, Broken Harbor, and vowed to read more...This sounds like a good candidate.
ReplyDeleteThat is some review!! Def adding to my list!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had time to read all the books I want to read. I've had In the Woods for years and still haven't gotten to it.
ReplyDeleteIf I liked mysteries I would buy this today based on your excitement and 'hell yeah' recommendation.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, love your photo/saying about negativity and a positive life. A few of my very close friends are choosing to bring negativity into their lives, creating chaos and wanting to drag me in (ie: confide affairs... that kind of stuff). I'm being forced to 'break up' with people and really focus on my theme for 2013 "choose happy". Life is hard enough at times, why create drama. Loving pinterest and the quotes!! warms my heart
Have a wonderful weekend. I miss my boy, know you miss yours too.
I must quit procrastinating and read both In the Woods and Likeness! You have mo curious and I feel kike I'm really missing out on something!
ReplyDeleteI only read the first book in the series. I am way behind.
ReplyDeleteAfter finishing In the Woods earlier this week, I'm Tana French's newest fan. This will be next and I'm so glad to hear you loved it.
ReplyDeleteSounds good :)
ReplyDeleteI've only read In the Woods but I have had this one on my shelf for forever now. Too bad I didn't read this review yesterday. I had a lull in ARCs and was looking for something to read. Started one that I'm enjoying and then an ARC came in the mail so I started it, too. Not a smart plan. I'm too slow of a reader to read two at a time and get them done in a timely fashion. Likeness sounds even better than In the Woods. Did you like it better or about the same?
ReplyDeleteThis is my favourite Tana French novel. I still have to read Broken Harbor. I should probably pick it up again when I go to the library shortly.
ReplyDeleteDue to my father-in-law's condition, I put down In The Woods and picked up lighter reads. I am now ready to pick it back up and then move on!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of her books and I don't know what I'm waiting for!
ReplyDeleteI just peeked at your thoughts because I really, really want to read this one but you already have me SUPER excited to read it!!! I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed it as much as the first one. I HAVE to grab this one the next time that I go to the library!!!
ReplyDeleteFrench is on my list but it will be sometime until I get to her. Maybe over the summer...
ReplyDeleteThanks Staci!
I really need to start this series. I checked and I do have the first one on audio. One of these days I'll get to it...
ReplyDeleteMarch is my month for mysteries - I think I need to read all three of the French's first books!
ReplyDeleteI so need to read this!
ReplyDelete"hell yeah" ... I'm sold!!
ReplyDeleteI am so looking forward to this one since I loved the first one so much. I have read lots of reviews that had issues with Cassie looking EXACTLY like the victim. At least I know that suspending my disbelief is worth it! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI agree regarding the need to suspend disbelief, but it was soooo good. This is my favorite of the series thus far.
ReplyDeleteIt's really difficult to pick a favorite from TF's books, but I'm going to have to say that this is probably my most favorite. I thought the tension was perfect and loved the fact that Cassie was able to get away with all she did. I think I held my breath on more than one occasion. Now I'm in the middle of Broken Harbor and the tension is just beginning to climb. TF is such a good writer. I know Gillian Flynn is the favorite these days, but I think TF's books are far more superior. The intricate web she weaves for each of her stories takes great skill and she's a master. Can you tell I'm a fan? ;)
ReplyDeleteI've heard so much about her books and I really need to read them! I don't know what keeps me from doing it, I even have one or two on my shelf at home!
