The A.B.C. Murders- Bookish Thoughts #3

What this book is about: Someone is murdering people in alphabetical order by name and location and has dared Poirot to try to catch them!

Why I wanted to read it: I've been meaning to read more Agatha Christie this year so that is one reason. The second reason is that I'm vowing to read more from my own shelves. Thirdly, I am participating in a the 52 Books 52 Weeks Challenge and I'm doing it with a twist by reading in alphabetical order! So, this is the perfect choice isn't it?? Get it, A.B.C. Murders......alphabetical reading challenge???? I'm easily amused!

Source: My personal library, but the book was purchased for a quarter from my library sale cart.

  • I loved the story being sort of narrated by Captain Hastings. This made the story fun and engaging for me.
  • The book flowed and was a fast read.
  • Poirot is so quirky and cool...how could I not like him? More Poirot!!!
  • I figured out who the real murderer was about 10 pages before the story ended...made me feel like I was playing the board game Clue (which I loved).
I am now addicted to all things Christie and have even listed all of her Poirot and Marple books on my challenge blog. I'm also inspired to listen to some of these books on audio. Has anyone out there listened to these and if so, any suggestions?

  1. I've always said you can't go wrong with Agatha Christie. It's been a while since I've read one of her books so it's time to go back and try one I haven't read.

    1. Hey, you are a busy woman...but her books are short and fast to read!

  3. Everyone who reads her says they can never figure out who did it until right until the end, so I should really stop avoiding her and read some, because I love that!

  4. Glad you're loving the amazing AG! I can't help you with the audio as I've just read her books. Did you ever watch the adaptations on PBS? David Suchet as Poirot is fantastic. You can probably get them from the library.

    1. I've watched one so far on PBS but I should watch more that's for sure!! I can get them from the library plus I downloaded PBS app on the iPad and you can watch episodes on that!! Way cool!

  5. I'm glad you are starting to read more Christie books, Staci. I love them. I've listened to several of them with some of them being narrated by Hugh Fraser (who plays Captain Hastings in some of the filmed versions), some narrated by David Souchet (Poirot) and some by Joan Hickson (one of the actors who played Miss Marple). I know there are others narrated by different people, but I'm not sure I've heard any of them.

  6. You know, I have never read an Agatha Christie novel. That's going to have to change soon. Do you think this is a good place to start?

  10. You make me want to start reading Agatha Christie again! I was hooked on her books when I was in high school, but I drifted away from them. I think I still have one I haven't read, so I'll have to dig it out.

    1. Yes, I am newly blissful over AC...I like Poirot but I've only had to read two books so far with him. Did you have a favorite character?

    2. Of the reoccuring characters I love Miss Marple. Some of my favorites though are some of her stand alone books.

  17. Too funny! After reading and listening to some AC four years ago, I got the bug and created the Anything Agatha Challenge! So, I totally understand your addiction. :) I have this one on my iPod. It'll be waiting for me when the mood strikes.

I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan and have a personal goal to read all of her books myself :) I haven't read this one yet but I think that it is going to have to be the next one! If I can make a recommendation...And Then There Were None is one of my favorites by her!

  21. I'm so glad you liked this one. I like Captain Hastings too. He's so funny as a foil for Poirot. A.B.C. Murders was kind of grim. I hope your next one is a bit lighter. Our library (and NetFlix) has a lot of the dvd sets of the PBS movies. But - be careful. I've watched a few that changed part of AG's story to suit the show. Like changing who the murderer was. Not good.

  22. Hastings is very cool! It was kind of grim but I didn't mind it all!! I will be watching them on NetFlix and from the library for sure. I'll remember not to put much stock into the movie versions..thanks for the heads up! And for the life of me why would they change who the murderer was???

  23. I must remember to go to my library book sale on Thursday to see if I can scrounge up some Christie. I miss reading her books; I often solved the case like you did but that just made me feel smart and that's always a good thing, right?
