At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:
5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal
2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)
The Promised World by Lisa Tucker
I've read quite a few favorable reviews on this one that made me want to read it immediately. I'm always interested in family dramas and this book has all of that and then some. I knew right away that something wasn't right with Lila and her twin brother Billy, but it took some time before I could really figure out what their relationship was all about. I thought the writing was really strong and the story had elements of mystery that I enjoyed trying to figure out. In the end, I felt my heart going out to Lila and felt that maybe she would find some peace. However, I thought the ending was abrupt, strange, and left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
My rating:
The Elephant's Magician by Kate DiCamillo
** Because I've loved pretty much everything DiCamillo has written, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. Oh, it was so beautiful. I absolutely loved the illustrations, but I do wish they were a bit darker. The story was fantastical and filled with love, patience, longing, and having faith in your dreams. I would have to say that this comes in second behind The Adventures of Edward Tulane. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone!!!
My Rating:
The Magician's Elephant has a great title! Glad to hear it's also a good book.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping to see The Promised World get a better rating from you, since I have it and I don't have The Magician's Elephant.
ReplyDeleteOh thanks for pointing out the new Kate DiCamillo book. Edward Tulane had me sobbing and is my favorite of hers so far. I am looking for this one soon.

I've heard so much about The Magician's Elephant! I haven't read anything by that author- will be sure to keep an eye out if I find anything by her.

ReplyDeleteMaybe I will pull The Magician's Elephant out and read it this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything by Kate DiCamillo but, if you rate this a 5 Heart and it's her second best, - well - I guess I better find one of her books.
ReplyDeleteI guess I've been under a rock, because I've never read Kate Dicamillo. Your review makes me want to fix that now.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend and happy reading.
I have heard only good things about The Magician's Elephant and mostly good things about The Promised World. I don't have either but since I don't really like abrupt endings I will consider getting DiCamillo's book first.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on The Promised World. I thought the ending was a bit rushed and abrupt... kind of like the author just got bored with the story.
ReplyDeleteGreat reviews! I still haven't written my post today. I am slow!
ReplyDeleteGlad u enjoyed The Magician's Elephant~~~~me too :)
ReplyDeletedid you read her book with Edward Toulane in the title? LOVED IT!!
It's always fun to come and see what you're reading.......
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!
I have been under the group rock with everyone else, having never heard of Kate DiCamillo. But I too am lured by the 5/5 rating!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to reading the Magician's Elephant. I really like Kate DiCamillo.
ReplyDeleteI've loved everything by DiCamillo too, but my favorite was Tale of Despereaux. It was good to see that you liked The Magician's Elephant.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to have to buy (shhhh!) The Elephant's Magician...it may be three years before I'm able to get it from the library. And NO WAY can I wait that long!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear the DiCamillo book is good. My daughter loves her books and has been looking forward to reading that one.
