At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:
5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal
2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)
After the Moment by Garrett Freymann-Weyr
The premise of this book was really promising. There was all of this buildup to "after the moment" which totally fell flat in the end. I liked Leigh, the main male character. But the author chose to use this book as her way of protesting the Iraq war. To me, it just didn't fit into the book no matter how hard she tried. She should've lost that thread in the story and just concentrated on Leigh and Maia.
My rating:
The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews
This book was splendid fun! I've never read Andrews, but I will be back to read more of her works. Dempsey is a character that you just like from the very beginning. I fell in love with small town Guthrie and all of the eccentric people that lived there. I could picture the house that she renovated in my mind and I wanted to be there helping her out!! The only thing that could've made this book better was pictures of that kitchen when Dempsey was done with it!!
My rating:
Secrets She Left Behind by Diane Chamberlain
Told from several points of view this story drew me in from the very beginning. Chamberlain has a way with relationships and showing each person's perspective. The family issues are real and very relevant to today's world. The secret has a profound impact on more people than you would originally realize. The pacing is wonderful, the story engaging, and when I was done reading I was totally satisfied. I will be reading more of Chamberlain in the future!
My rating:
You had a pretty good reading week. Secrets She Left Behind looks so good to me.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Fixer Upper too! Have Secrets on hold at the library.
ReplyDeleteYou really captured, it sounds like to me, the essence of "After the Moment" - a plot as an excuse for a cause. Those kind of books don't seem to work out very well. Great reviews today!
ReplyDeleteSecrets She Left Behind looks like one to pick up!
ReplyDeleteThat third one sounds GOOD!!!Bummer about the first one....maybe she should have written two books and concentrated on her issues the the 2nd one! LOL! :):):):):):):):):):):):)
ReplyDeleteSecrets She Let Behind sounds really good, but so do so many others...what to do, what to do??? LOL
ReplyDeleteHey, 2 4 hearts book in a week, that's good!! I like your style, it gets right to the "heart" of the book. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteThe Fixer Upper sounds great! I'm putting it on my wishlist.
ReplyDeletemaybe this is why you're feeling a little burned out--so much creativity is going into these reviews? They are terrific :)
ReplyDeleteI really must use this idea for the weeks when I read more books than I can review fully. I know it's not meant to be a shared meme but I'd give you credit, don't worry. Those last two sound like they were pretty good.
ReplyDeleteSandra: I would love for you to use this. I guess I never thought of it as a meme...please use it!!! Anyone who wants to please do!!
ReplyDeleteI like fiction 'reno' books so I think I'd like The Fixer Upper. I still haven't the last Diane Chamberlain I picked up, something Lies (oops I forget) lol. I have to do something about my reading piles!!
ReplyDeleteWell done on these mini reviews, I would love to be able to do them but I don't think I could get straight to the heart of it like you do :-)
another oops, that was sposed to say 'still haven't read the last Diane Chamberlain.
ReplyDeleteI think my brain has gone to sleep, time for bed her in Australia :-)
I love these reviews...short and sweet works for me! Secrets She Left Behind sounds like a really great read and I'm adding it plus The Fixer Upper to the TBR list :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a really interesting format! I want to read both The Fixer Upper and Secrets She Left Behind. Thanks for the reviews!
