At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:
5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Happy that I read it...a good read.
2 of Hearts- Just O.K but nothing to write home about.
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)
Becoming Jane Eyre- Sheila Kohler
I grabbed this one from the library because I am very curious about Charlotte Bronte and her sisters. This book takes the reader into the time period when Charlotte was taking care of her father while he was recovering from his eye surgery. Each of the Bronte children get a turn to shine in this little gem and I came to realize that the sisters hard a very hard life, especially when it came to their spoiled, drug addicted brother. The first 50 pages or so were a bit slow for me and I almost shut the book for good. But curiosity about Charlotte won out and I'm glad that I finished it. It wasn't the best book about Charlotte I've read, that would be The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte, but it was a solid read that did fill in some gaps for this reader.
My Rating:
Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper- Harriet Scott Chessman
I was browsing the library shelves and for some reason the title of this little book instantly got my attention. I knew absolutely nothing about the American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt before this book, but after finishing this one the other day, I want to know more!! One of the main highlights in this book are the 5 pictures of various paintings that include Lydia, Mary's sister and beloved model for many of her paintings. Just knowing that the person in the painting was Mary's sister made me look twice at them and really study them. Each painting has it's own chapter where the author tries to tell the story behind each work of art. If you want to learn about an American woman painter and about her lovely sister who was her muse then I absolutely recommend this book for you. P.S. My favorite painting in the book is where Lydia is working on her embroidery.
My Rating:
