1.) Reasons you chose this book

I love a great regency romance every once in a while and I've never read a book by Grace Burrowes so I thought I would give it a shot.

2.) Reasons you liked or disliked this book

  • I honestly felt that the story wasn't exciting at all. There was no build up to the relationship between Anna and the Earl. The book is 450 pages in length and by page 70 we're suppose to believe that the prim and proper housemaid Anna would actually touch the Earl's family jewels??????
  • I don't mind sex but I would like some depth to the characters and to their relationship. Some of the sex scenes were fairly explicit and at times just not in good taste.
  • I just loved (dripping with sarcasm here...) how when a woman was pregnant she was referred to be breeding.
  • I felt that the plot was really thin and at times felt really forced. I knew exactly what was going to happen before I hit page 150.

3.) Reasons you are recommending this book
  • Reasons for- If you love this genre then honestly you would probably enjoy this one immensely. In fact I am listing a review from Yankee Romance Reviewers who absolutely loved this one and a post from Babbling About Books which informs me that this was a Publisher's Weekly Best Book of 2010.
          Yankee Romance Reviewer's
          Babbling about Books, and more
Book Girl of Mur-y Castell - She loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Reasons against- I have read Amanda Quick's books in the past and totally loved them. The writing was creative, the story fast-paced, and the relationships believable. I'm probably being unfair again and comparing 'The Heir' to Quick's books so with that being said I would give this author another try.

Rating:  2.5/5

  1. Touching the Earl's family jewels...priceless. It has been many many years since I read a romance novel. After so many I got tired of the same plot and the sex scenes. But oh how I loved this review. Definitely made me chuckle at your reasons for disliking the book.

Thanks for starting my morning off with a laugh.

  2. I really appreciate your honest review, Staci. Especially since you enjoy a good regency from time to time. I haven't read this author so I can't add anything.
I'm glad to see you like Amanda Quick because I found out last night that an online book club I read with has picked one of her older books for our next selection :-) I haven't read any of hers either (I'm a newbie, lol).

  7. I haven't read a Regency Romance book in years but I used to like them. I'm afraid my tastes have changed though so not sure if I'd like it now. I appreciate your honest review!

  8. I like a good historical romance once in awhile too, but it looks like I'll be skipping this one. I'm too busy from the fruits of my breeding to waste time on bad books :)

  9. I'm pretty fussy when it comes to these books so I'd probably pass if you didn't love it. I'm going to take a peek at Amanda Quick's books though.

  11. I'm not a regency romance fan so this wouldn't be one that I'd grab. I liked your humor and positive attitude about this one even though you didn't love it.

  12. The more improbable the relationships, the more romantic. Great escape reading!

  13. I like the way you broke the pros and cons down in your review. I just read my first Romance novel a few months ago but I don't believe I would make this the second.

    Sharp blog you have here.

  14. I love this review post. Great fun to read. I'm with you on an occasional Regency read but I think I'll skip this one. So glad you mentioned Amanda Quick's older titles. They are so good. I need to do a reread of one.

btw, I really like the Christmas look.
