Six Sentence Saturday- Last of 2009 Books Part 2

Welcome to Six Sentence Saturday.
Where I try to express my thoughts on recent reads using only 6 sentences!!!!.
At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:

5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal

2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)

The Road- Cormac McCarthy
** This book is: stark, heartbreaking, painful, desolate, enduring, and hopeful.

My Rating:

Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
** I fell in love with this book almost immediately. It has something to do with the way the Japanese feel about love and loss and how they put it into words. I totally understood why the main character loved kitchens. Kitchens to me is where life is really happening, everyone gathers in the kitchen, this is the heart of the home. After losing her Grandma she feels such an extreme sense of loss and not belonging that I wanted to hug her and let her know that every thing would be alright. This book is very short so if you're looking to get a glimpse into another culture but scared of huge tomes then grab this one...you won't be disappointed!
My Rating:

Murder on Nob Hill by Shirley Tallman
** What a lovely young feisty character Sarah Woolson is!! She's a lawyer in San Francisco in 1880, a time where women who work outside of the house are frowned upon. Sarah does not care because she does not want any MAN telling her how to live her life. The mystery was very well written and I wasn't sure of the guilty party until almost the last page. I loved learning historical facts about San Francisco and the city is a major character in this book. I'm most definitely going to continue on with the next book in this series- The Russian Hill Murders!

My Rating:

June Bug by Chris Fabry
** The premise of this book was very promising....child sees themselves on a Missing Child poster and begins to wonder who he/she really is. The story was engaging ,but at times I found it a little slow going. This one could be classified as Christian fiction and there was a lot of references to being saved, praying, and going to church. At times I felt the author used a heavy hand with this and should've used it more sparingly (IMHO). June Bug is a young girl that will capture your heart and you do find yourself rooting for the man she knows as "Dad." I'm glad I read this one.

My Rating:

The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum
** From the very first sentence I was drawn into Emily's world. At times I knew exactly how she felt about her life- was this as good as it was going to get? Do I deserve this person who loves me? As a result of losing her mother at an early age, Emily copes by pushing people away before they can leave her. It takes monumental changes in her life before she learns how to come to grips with her past and to believe in a future. A future where she deserves to be happy. I have become a fan of Buxbaum and her writing is so true and real....I can't wait to get my hands on her second book- After You.

  1. I have had The Road on my shelf for so long now. I think I can handle the bleakness of the book, but the super spare writing might pose a challenge for me.

  2. What a good group of books - only one average book out of five is very good. Kitchen looks very good. It's on my List.

  5. Intriguing variety from The Road to June Bug. It was fun to read your reviews in 6 sentences or less - I LIKE that! You hit the punch line right away. Kitchen actually sounds really appealing.

    Thanks!

  6. So glad you enjoyed Kitchen! I couldn't agree more.

The Road was a DNF for me a year or so ago... more a case of bad timing than anything else I think. Will give it another try one of these days.

  7. My husband loved The Road but he said the movie wasn't that good. (notice I did not accompany him to the movie, in spite of the presence of Viggo Morgensen on the screen!)

  11. A bunch of these sound really good. I've been hearing good things about Kitchen and I love a good cozy so Murder on Nobb Hill sounds like it would be right up my alley. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these!

  12. Murder in my neighborhood? Oh my, I've gotta read the book. I know I have postponed reading The Road for the longest time because it sounds so grim and glum. But I'll have to put it on my reading list. :)

  16. I'll have to have a go at Road--I loved your brief review, but the card gave me a better idea. You seem to pick good ones.

  17. I think this proves that you don't need a thousand word review to convince someone of reading a book : I have been thinking of reading The Road for a short while, but now I know I just have to!
I liked Kitchen too, glad to know you liked it!

  18. I swear I'm going to steal this idea-the six sentence part anyway, to write my reviews. I read a lot but write so few as I agonize over them and end up writing nothing. This is all the information I personally need about a book anyway. Too many reviews give the whole synopsis and that's not for me. I enjoyed Kitchen too and gave it the same rating. I am not familiar with the others except the first of course but I really don't enjoy dystopian literature.

  20. The Road was a hard book to read but I'm not sorry I read it.

Julie Buxbaum is awesome. Someone just might still have their copy of After You for someone if they want it. I still need to read this one though. I'm getting there.

  22. I'm back, better late than never but now I'm thinking I shouldn't have stopped in because I just love the sound of 3 of those books, The Road, Kitchen and Opposite of Love. I was hoping to start the new year off with a little more discipline LMAO (who am I kidding)

  24. The Road doesn't draw me in at the moment or I just need to be in the right mindset. My husband listened to it on CD and liked it. Kitchen sounds very good and I'm adding it to my wishlist.

  25. I really have to read The Road one of these days. I've had in on my shelf for quite a while now...but it scares me. It really scares me.

  26. The Road was a much better book than I thought it would be. I'm glad I broke down and read it. I hope to read Kitchen at some point.
