Six Sentence Saturday

Welcome to Six Sentence Saturday.
Where I try to express my thoughts on recent reads using only 6 sentences!!!!.
At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:

5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal

2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)

If Grace Is True: Why God Will Save Every Person by Phillip Gulley
** I'm not a church goer because I've experienced so many hypocrites that organized religion turns me off. This book helped affirm a lot of things I already believe. I believe that God is kind. I believe that forgiveness is between me and God - no one else. I don't believe in purgatory, hell, fire and brimstone...but in love, kindness, and love your neighbors as you would yourself. I truly enjoyed the perspectives given by these two authors and read this book with an open mind.
My Rating:

A Year in Japan by Kate Williamson
** I loved this book. Even if you haven't been to Japan and just want to immerse yourself in their culture for an hour this would be the perfect book to read. The paintings/drawings are gorgeous and I loved the informational, yet personal paragraphs that the author included. Reading this brought back some memories of my time as an exchange student in Japan. It was interesting to note how different Niigata (northern Japan) was from Kyoto (southern) by way of traditions and food! A very fun way to spend an hour or two and highly recommended!!!
My Rating:

Rage: A Love Story by Julie Anne Peters
** I've read some of the author's other YA GLBT books(Luna, and Keeping You A Secret) and enjoyed them a lot more than I did this one. I was actually looking for a more developed relationship between the two girls. Because without that, the actual abuse that occurs doesn't totally ring true to me. Even though I was a bit let down I still think the author wrote about an important topic- Domestic violence. It occurs in all types of relationships: gay/lesbian, straight..violence knows no labels or sexual preference. I would recommend this to a young adult who is questioning whether or not their relationship with a significant other is healthy or not.

  2. Spammers have been out in full force this week! I've been hit a lot. I don't know what they get out of it either. Most of us moderate comments anyway and just delete them.
Anyway, ditto Rhapsody --- your experiences as an exchange student would be fun reading. That looks like a wonderful book.

  4. I really like your review style! Six sentences - great! That should be enough room to give a feeling of your views of the book(s). The playing cards are a cool touch as well.

I admit, I am influenced by reviews; thre's so much out there to choose from and I'd rather not waste time on Jokers or the 2 of hearts!

    Thanks, Jill
"Blood and Groom" is now in stores! Check out the trailer: http://ow.ly/FGOm

  11. There's definitely something to be said for such concise, to the point reviews - I love them! It doesn't take forever for the point of the review to come across. Sadly I don't think I have your talent for it, but I wish I did. Takes me forever to put into words what I'm trying to convey.

And I agree with everyone about The Year in Japan - sounds good and it would make a nice holiday gift too.

  14. I've been looking all over for A Year in Japan ever since Eva mentioned it - not in my library system or any local bookstores. Now that you love it too, looks like amazon may get yet another order from me!

  16. I know you were telling me about the "If Grace Were True" book. Sounds good. I am adding it to my Goodreads list and I blame you for the ever growing list. Just kidding. Thanks to you, I have renewed my love for reading.

  17. More and more, all the time, I'm convinced we're cut from the same cloth, Staci! :D

Would definitely like to read A Year in Japan one of these days. (And I love that cover!)

Sorry Rage turned out to be a bit disappointing. I haven't read any of her books yet, but I've been looking forward to trying her, especially Luna. And I already have Define "Normal" so that will probably be the first one I get to.

Thanks for the reviews...I never tire of Six Sentence Saturdays! :D

  18. It sounds like we have similar feelings about God and organized religion. The first book sounds very affirming.

I read your review of Rage with particular interest, since I enjoyed Luna by Julie Anne Peters. I may give this one a miss.

  19. As always, I enjoy reading your mini reviews, Staci. If Grace is True sounds like an interesting book--I really appreciate your perspective on that one. A Year in Japan sounds like such a good book. I am glad you enjoyed it.

Domestic violence is a terrible problem. I'm noticing it more and more in teen relationships these days. Books that deal with these topics are so important. I am sorry it wasn't as good as the author's others though.
