'The Twelfth Enchantment' by David Liss (TLC Tour Book + Giveaway)

Teaser Synopsis: With the world undergoing an industrial transformation, and with England on the cusp of revolution, Lucy is drawn into a dangerous conspiracy in which her life, and her country’s future, are in the balance. Inexplicably finding herself at the center of cataclysmic events, Lucy is awakened to a world once unknown to her: where magic and mortals collide, and the forces of ancient nature and modern progress are at war for the soul of England . . . and the world.

First thought after closing the book: "That was just silly!"

I thought this book would be so much better than it turned out. After reading the synopsis,  it sounded like a great fantasy book set during Regency England (a time period which I adore)and right about the time of the industrial revolution. The reader gets a lot of information about how bad the mills are and the how evil the owners treat their workers. At times I felt as if I was being clobbered over the head with all the morality and how disgusting the industrial revolution was to nature and the animals that the magical part of the book was lost for me. And frankly, I just wasn't that crazy about Lucy and Lord Bryon (his character was just so out there) In my honest opinion I just didn't really care for it. I think I wasn't in the mood to really suspend disbelief so for me the characters felt flat, forced and basically contrived.

Recommend? Here again it could be right book wrong time..I don't know. It wasn't a book that called to me when I put it down at night......that tells me everything I want to know.

Rating: 6/10

I urge you to visit the other blogs that are hosting this book for TLC. Many of them have loved this book and I really think you need to read more reviews before deciding whether or not this one is right for you!! I think that I'm the only one who didn't love it.!! Here's what other bloggers are saying about The Twelfth Enchantment:

One Book Shy: "The author managed to leave the reader wondering at many points throughout the book exactly who Lucy could really count on.  There are many plot twists and turns to keep the suspense high."

A Chick Who Reads: "This is one of those books that lovers of historial fiction will find hard to put down. I know I couldn't. It has so much of everything in it; romance, intrigue, witches and great historical figures and set in one of my favorite periods, Regency England."

Fiction State of Mind: "Liss deftly guides the reader through Lucy's world and the historical elements that shaped England's industrial age. A wonderful engrossing  read."

Unabridged Chick: "I love everything about this novel.  I love the historical setting and the imaginative, inventive blending of history and fiction.  I adore the development of Lucy and her empowering relationship with Mary Crawford, a woman who taught her that magic was real and could be mastered."

  3. To end a book thinking that was just silly..well that does not sound like something I would like to do

  4. Sounds as if the historical aspect might have been better without the magical part, but without relatable characters any book is difficult for me to like.

  6. I had seen other positive reviews of this book, but I have to say I really am sick of this cover image being used.

  7. The cover is silly to me too. I love your "first thought" entries. They are so insightful.

  9. I appreciate your honest reaction and that you encourage your readers to check other reviews as well as your own. Sometimes a book and reader just don't click. I've heard a lot of good things about this book and I like David Liss's other work, so I'm looking forward to giving it a shot. And now I'm curious to see if I experience some of what you did! So, thanks for the chance to win a copy!

  10. I love how you share pieces of other reviews when you don't care for a book. This book does sound interesting but I haven't a clue if I'll end up reading it or not.

  11. I don't think you should feel bad because you were the only one who didn't like it. I hate when I read 10 raving reviews of the same book and yet when I read it I hate it. I'd rather know that there are a few other bloggers out there who hated it too!

  12. I find it strange that as a lover of historical fiction this book has not appealed to me (and that was before I read your review). Not sure if I will be reading this one.

  13. Sorry this one was disappointing. I don't know much about the real Lord Byron, but he's been fictionalized in at least two novels I've read in the past couple of years and he's always portrayed as a bit odd.

  14. I've read the description of this one over and over again because I love the cover but the book itself just doesn't sound like it's for me. Sorry you didn't really enjoy it.

  15. Just goes to show that every book is not for every reader. Sorry it didn't click for you, Staci, but I appreciate your take.

  17. Aw, I'm sorry to hear this one wasn't fit for you. Your "first thought" made me laugh though. I'm not sure it is for me either but I'll keep it in mind. Maybe I'll borrow it instead of buy it?
