'Silver Girl' by Elin Hilderbrand

Teaser Synopsis:
Meredith Martin Delinn just lost everything: her friends, her homes, her social standing - because her husband Freddy cheated rich investors out of billions of dollars. Desperate and facing homelessness, Meredith receives a call from her old best friend, Constance Flute. Connie's had recent worries of her own, and the two depart for a summer on Nantucket in an attempt to heal.

First Thoughts after finishing book: I'm glad that I didn't end up hating Meredith!!

What I liked about this book:

  • The story is very relevant to what has been occurring in corporate America and Wall Street. Greed, selfishness, and amassing "things" is the main agenda for many in this country.
  • Meredith's best friend Connie- if not for this character I would have stopped reading this book as I really couldn't take another minute trying to feel sorry for someone who wouldn't think twice about dropping $20,000 on linens and candles!! Connie is the best friend that I think a lot of women would love to have. She came across as a genuine and caring person.
  • The setting was pretty awesome...I would love to visit Nantucket, but I'm sure they wouldn't let me in!!
  • The meaning behind the title Silver Girl....I'd tell you more but I would never spoil the story for anyone!
What I didn't like about this book:
  • Meredith! I realize that the author wanted to convey to the reader how materialistic Meredith had become but geesh.....I'm sickened by the excess of her spending and how she never blinked once about spending tens of thousands of dollars on stupid stuff!! That part that really galled me is that this is so prevalent in our society. I'm disgusted at how the average person believes that in order to be happy they must ACQUIRE things...the more you spend the better you are. I almost bailed on this one just because of that and the name dropping on clothes...IMHO, I could care less what designer shoes you have on. Uh oh...I think I just went on a rant. Sorry...........
  • My other beef is that this is a Reagan Arthur book and I've read a few from this division and have thought it to be more literary fiction. To me this was a good beach read but nothing more than that.
Recommend? I would recommend this one to friends but I'd give them a heads up on how I really had a hard time liking and/or feeling sorry for Meredith. But I'm pretty sure that was the author's intention!!

  1. Her books always are somewhat fun for summer reads. Not sure I'll read this one though.

  2. I think I'll be echoing your sentiments on Meredith, can't stand that type!! But still sounds like a good read, especially being pre-warned :)

  3. I'm just not a fan of Elin Hilderbrand. It seems like most of her books deal with the wealthy in some way. I would have thrown the book at my annoyance with Meredith. I hate her already.

  4. I'm over half way through this one and am enjoying it. The amount of detail reminds me of a Jennifer Haigh novel (alot of back story/memories, slowly moving the plot forward).

I actually know someone who has more money than they could ever spend, so I feel the Meredith brand mentioning feels real. I think the author had to do this to make readers in the top 1% income bracket feel the story is accurate. Even though you and I may have never heard of some of the brands... and add credibility to the stores on Nantucket.

I'm at the point where Connie is spending the night our, Meredith is sitting in the hallway (hearing noises outside).... so my opinion cuold change. :)

  5. I love the setting of this book and would proabably feel a similar distaste for Meredith too. Although I must admit a little shopping therapy every once in a while helps boost my spirits.

  7. Similar theme as the wonderfully fun YA trilogy She's So Dead To Us.

  8. If they let me on Nantucket, you'll have no trouble. I was surprised this was a RA book as well. I've had like/dislike reactions to Erin's books.

  9. I've got this one on my Kindle and hope to read it this summer. I can see where the excessive spending would be annoying. We are a materialistic society indeed. I'll let you know what I think when I get around to this one. :-)

  10. This author is not for me. I read about 20 pages of another novel she wrote and could not deal with the silly women in it.

I think what sells for her is the setting. Such a gorgeous locale!

  13. I'm not sure this is for me. I get really angry at the Merediths of the world who can't see hungry and homeless children or other less fortunate people around them.

  14. This one just screamed "beach book" to me (and not just because of the cover). :) I haven't read it and probably won't because I have so many other books in the queue.

  16. Sorry this one didn't cut it for you. I was so anticipating reading this, now I'm not so eager. I think I would be very annoyed at that character too. Usually Elin's books are very enjoyable.

  18. I have this in my tbr pile and thought it would be a light, beach book. Maybe not. I am hoping I am not too nauseated by Meredith but I too am a more frugal, careful spender. There is more to life than superior linens!

  19. I want to try this author, but I don't want to start with this one. Don't understand why people spend so much money on designer things just so that people will notice them. Do I have $100 to spend on a wallet? Sure, but why would I waste good money on that?!
