The Amish Cook: Recollections and recipes from an Old Order Amish Family- Elizabeth Coblentz with Kevin Williams

My friend had this book on her coffee table and I picked it up while visiting and could not put it down. I really am intrigued by the Amish way of life and reading Elizabeth Coblentz's letters was an amazing insight into her world. She wrote a weekly column for the Amish newspaper, The Budget. Her writing has inspired me to buy a really nice journal and just record the weekly happenings in my life. Even the small mundane things like the weather....this is something that I think my children and grandchildren may actually enjoy reading some day. The recipes sounded amazingly delicious and surprisingly easy. If you like the slower way of life, good home cooking, and getting a personal glimpse into an Indiana Amish woman's world, than I absolutely recommend this book to you!

  3. I'm intrigued by the Amish life style too and love to read books set in the Amish community. (Marta Perry is my favorite author.) I think book will add a lot to the experience. I'm off to find it at the library.

  4. This sounds like a wonderful book Staci! I am intrigued with the Amish way of life also. There are Amish communities near us and I really need to spend more time exploring their shops and businesses. We were just at a nearby flea market over Labor Day and there were many Amish shopping and selling produce and goods. I am definitely going to look for a copy of this book. I love your idea of keeping a journal about the happenings in your life. Thanks for sharing this book with us!

  10. sounds like a great book with recipes. I use to make my own bread every week and was quite particular about using only wooden spools and board to knead it on. I read somewhere it was better for the dough. I think I would like this book too. Thanks for the review.

  11. One of my best vacations ever was to a bed and breakfast in Amish country, staying in a "mother-in-law" cottage which they stocked with Amish food (including fresh butter, eggs, and syrup). I never wanted to leave! I'm sure I would feel similar love towards this book!

  14. Sounds like a very interesting book. I am awed by the Amish in today's day and age and completely respect that they can still keep to their way of life.

  15. Our local newspaper carried the Amish Cook weekly. When we first moved here, I was intrigued by the column as written by Elizabeth Coblentz. When Elizabeth died, her daughter Lovina Eicher took over and it's still good reading. She talks about the garden, cleaning the house for church services, her 6 or 7 kids, (I've lost count)and always includes a recipe. For some reason, this is fascinating to me.
Staci, I think it's a good idea for you to keep a journal - you never know what your kids will find intriguing in the future.
