At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:
5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Happy that I read it...a good read.
2 of Hearts- Just O.K but nothing to write home about.
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)
Every Secret Thing- Anne Tatlock
I picked this one up because of a Goodreads ad and after reading it thought this would be a book that I'd enjoy. I did enjoy it, but it didn't blow me away. And you know something....I'm o.k. with that. I still like to sit down with a good solid book and become involved with the story, and that is what happens with this one. I liked that the main character is a book lover, in fact, she sounds like she would fit into our crowd easily. I would classify this one as a gentle read that was worth the time invested in reading it
My Rating:
Heart of the Matter- Emily Giffin
I love every single thing that Giffin has put out and eagerly looked forward to reading this one. The biggest problem is that I read this right after, This One is Mine, and to have back-to-back extramarital affairs was just a bit too much for me. I was so damn mad at the "other woman" and thought how dare she and don't even get me started on the hubby who crossed the line. Tessa was a woman who I could relate to and I certainly felt her pain and disbelief every step of the way. I especially love the way Giffin ties up the ending, very much like real life there sometimes isn't anything that can be done except to learn, grow, forgive, and try to move on. If you haven't read Giffin before then what are you waiting for??? She's awesome and this book is stellar, because it is authentic and real.
My Rating:
Great reviews. I want to read Heart of the Matter. I will have to request that from the library.
ReplyDeleteEvery Secret Thing sounds good to me . . of course every book can't be 5* or even 4 * but that doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable. I'm putting this one on "the list", you know that never-ending- always-expanding list. I don't think I'll live long enough to read them all. Thanks for another great 6 sentence Saturday.
ReplyDeleteI too like it when books end realistically!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been online in about a week - have you posted your review for This one is Mine?
ReplyDeleteI liked Heart of the MAtter but I liked her previous novels more - they were more fun/flirty, which is what I have come to expect from Giffin. Did you know the Baby book is being made into a movie? This makes sense since they can draw from three books! I can't wait.
I read A Place Called Morning by Ann Tatlock and remember really loving it. I haven't read this one by her but I'll have to check into it. I like her writing.
ReplyDeleteI have to catch up on Giffin's books. I think I've read the first two, maybe only 1 and have already forgotten them. I could probably reread by now-I do remember liking her first book though. One should really check her shelf downstairs because I'm thinking maybe another one of hers is down there. lol.
sounds like Griffen is a great author. Loved your reviews today.
ReplyDeletebummer bout that 1st one....it looked promising!!! loving the reviews as always!!!! :):):):):):):):):):):):)
ReplyDeleteI Have that book by Tatlock (unread of course)..LOL Sorry it did not WOW you.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything by Emily Giffin but I just checked my library and they have several titles for her. She's on my list now.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
I haven't read any of Giffen's work, but I really want to. I studied this book at Costco for a long time today, but managed to be strong and not buy it.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading a book by Ann Tatlock (wish I could remember the name) and had a very similar reaction - good story, didn't love it, but an enjoyable way to spend a few hours.
ReplyDeleteI just bought Heart of the Matter and can't wait to read it. So glad to hear you really liked it!
ReplyDeleteTerrific, concise reviews! :-) I really enjoy this feature, Staci.

I love the cover of Tatlock's novel. I enjoy books that don't blow me away, and agree that there is nothing wrong with that.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Literary Feline! I ditto what she said. :)
ReplyDeleteI've only read the first book in a trilogy by Giffin (Something Borrowed maybe) and really was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I think your words describe that book as well - "authentic and real." I have the other two on my TBR Shelves (yes, I have many of those!) and look forward to finishing that trilogy. I hope to get my hands on more of her books in the future.
