At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:
5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal
2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)
The Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins
First off, I have to say that as a middle school librarian I can't believe how late I was to read this book!! My own son told me that I needed to read this one immediately and that was well over a year ago!! This is a book that I feel any reluctant reader would devour. I don't think you could go wrong with the audio version either. I have a teacher friend who has read this book out loud to a group of 8th graders and they were enthralled. In fact, one of the students who struggles with reading came looking for me to supply her with Catching Fire...what higher praise can a book receive????
My Rating:
Darklight (Book #2 Wondrous Strange Series)- Lesley Livingston
The Winter King is sick and the faerie world is being threatened. Sonny is not who he thinks he is...nor does he have any clue. But Kelley does and she is forced to make a decision that will change both of their lives forever. Livingston has created another magical book with Darklight and I devoured this in one sitting. At times the Otherworld is a bit difficult to understand...a lot of different characters with magical qualities and I'm never quite sure who is good and who is wicked, but I guess that only adds to the fun with this series. I eagerly anticipate the next book in this series!!
My Rating:
The Walk by Richard Paul Evans
I'm a bit divided on my thoughts about this one. On one hand, I totally love the idea of a broken man who has lost everything in life and decides to walk from Seattle to Florida, learning a few things about life and himself on this journey. On the flip side, I had a hard time getting into the style of writing because it felt choppy and canned at times. I know that a few of my friends feel that Evans is a cookie-cutter writer and I would have to agree with that statement (Patterson is labeled as such but I will never quit reading the Alex Cross series). Will I be back to read the next installment in this series??? I've decided that yes, I will pick up book 2 and see how it goes.....this may be one series that I won't finish, but I want to give Evans one more shot before I call it quits.

Staci, you're not the only one who has been slow to read HUNGER GAMES. I keep meaning to read it. Definitely this summer.
ReplyDeleteI also have THE WALK. I have debated picking it up, but I suppose I should just to see how it goes for me.
I was going to say now I'm the last one to read The Hunger Games, but I see there are still at least a couple of us ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou hve presuaded me to read The Hunger Games. I'll take a look at for sure!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read The Hunger yet either but may get it for my granddaughter. I like the sound of The Walk. It reminds me of Walk Across America. If the writing isn't good, I may not bother.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read Hunger Games yet either. I will - one of these days, months, years, err. Glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger Games is great, isn't it? though it's horrendously disturbing. I reviewed it a while back: http://laughingstars.net/2009/11/21/book-review-42-the-hunger-games-by-suzanne-collins/
ReplyDeleteOne of these days I'm going to have to break down and drink the Hunger Games Kool-Aid. Apparently it's good or something!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how late you are to read it either! :--) But I understand too - it took some convincing of myself to get myself to read it. I just couldn't believe it could possibly be all that good! :--)
ReplyDeleteOh Hunger Games was one of my favorite books! I have Catching Fire right now. I had it before but took it back without reading it. Hopefully this time I read it because I know I won't be disappointed!
ReplyDeleteMy husband's not much of a reader and he read The Hunger Games last summer and loved it. I still haven't read it yet. I'm convinced I'm going to be the last person in the free world to read it.
ReplyDeleteDid you pick up Catching Fire right away? I will be an Alex Cross fan forever too! Don't think I've read Richard Paul Evans.
ReplyDeleteStaci...you had a good week! Sorry to hear that The Walk was just so so. I do plan to read it.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed the Hunger Games, although really I don't think I've heard of anyone hating that series. :)
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I think U have me hooked on those first two!!! Happy Mothers Day! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
ReplyDeleteHi Staci, wishing you a Happy Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteYay - glad you loved Hunger Games. It seems to be a novel you really can't go wrong in recommending!
ReplyDeleteStill haven't read Hunger Games - not sure what I'm waiting for.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't read Evans either, but I know what's keeping me from that one ;)
So glad you loved The Hunger Games! Catching Fire is just as good, if not better :)
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that you enjoyed The Hunger Games. I'll be interested in hearing what you think of Catching Fire. I can't wait for book three this summer!
ReplyDeleteStaci, better late than not at all, I'm so glad you loved The Hunger Games, now get cracking on Catching Fire or Mockingjay will be out LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm keen to read the Lesley Livingston books so thanks for the reminder!
Both of my girls are pestering me to read "The Hunger Games" I think I over challenged myself this year and didn't leave much room for books I want to read.
ReplyDeleteI want to read that fairy book. I know the TBR challenge said not to add any more books to your list this year, but . . .
I would agree Evans is mediocre
