At the end of each review I will post a

Rating scale will be as follows:

4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal
2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)
Home Safe by Elizabeth Berg
Berg is one of those authors that can just really tug my heart strings. This novel did exactly that and much more. The story made me question what would I do if my husband suddenly died? I totally related to the main character Helen and at times felt myself wanting to hug her. There is a moment in the book where Helen questions if she really knew her husband or not, and this had me on the edge of my seat. I absolutely recommend this one to those that enjoy family fiction and lovely writing.
My Rating:
Tricks by Ellen Hopkins
Hopkins is a YA author that does not hold anything back. She explores all topics and puts it out there in such a realistic manner that at times as a parent it will make your toes curl. The sad reality is that there are young people dealing with these problems day in and day out. This one centers around 5 teens that find themselves involved in prostitution in different ways: trying to pay the bills, running away from an abusive home, manipulating people to get what they want, drugged and held against their will........horrific and mind boggling. I believe this is one of her best to date and even though the book states 14 +, I honestly thought more like 16+ and this is coming from someone who doesn't believe in censorship!!!
My Rating:
I'm looking forward to reading Home Safe one of these days!
ReplyDeleteElizabeth Berg is one of those authors on my "meaning to try" lists. I've had one of her books on my shelf to try for years now (pathetic, I know). I just haven't ever been in the mood to read it.
ReplyDeleteHome Safe sounds like a good one.
Tricks sounds like a worthwhile read. It definitely takes on a difficult issue. I'm glad to hear the author does a good job with it.
I had Berg's new one home from the library a few times but never had the chance to even open it up. I'll be fixing that in the new year. I really enjoy her writing.
ReplyDeleteIs Tricks non-fiction? Will put this one on my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteI love Elizabeth Berg too.
ReplyDeleteTricks sounds like one I'd definitely want to read first before giving it to my daughter. Luckily I have quite a few years before she's old enough to read this one.
Perfection by Julie Metz is also about the husband dying (although it is an actual true memoir). It really made me think about making sure I had everything in order (and of course, no deep dark secrets around!) because you just never know!
ReplyDeleteI like the Ellen Hopkins books I've read and I'll definitely be reading Tricks sooner rather than later. Thanks for the short but sweet reviews!
ReplyDeleteThese sound FAB!!!!! Thanks for the email.....U have nooooooooooo idea what it meant to me!!! :):):):):) PS...BRIAN and his FRIEND (No wife in that statement...LOL!) went to the Zombie movie today!! LOL!!! Mommy stayed home and cleaned house! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
ReplyDeleteI really like the cover of Berg's latest novel. I plan on reading soon.
ReplyDeleteI came sooooo close to breaking my book buying ban today by picking up Tricks. I just want that one so badly!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the cover on Home Safe! I'd probably enjoy the book, too...though I already spend enough time wondering how I'd survive if my husband ever suddenly died. :/
Berg has been Hit or Miss for me. This latest book was a miss in my book...JMO.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it though.
I'm pretty sure I've read somethings by Ms. Berg and enjoyed them and Home Safe sounds like another winner. I will put this on my list! Thanks Staci!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy Elizabeth Berg's writing. I haven't read Home Safe yet, but definitely have it on my wish list.
ReplyDeleteThey both sound like emotional reads and with the great ratings how can I resist. *sigh* I have no will power!
ReplyDeleteI know I've said this 100 times already, but I really do need to read my Hopkins!
ReplyDeleteI would choose Home Safe, just for the title.
ReplyDeleteI have heard good things about Tricks. I look forward to reading it at some point and time!
ReplyDeleteI love the cover of Home Safe - glad to see it's good.
ReplyDeleteI'm listening to an Elizabeth Berg novel right now, but I've not read this one. Eventually I'll get to it because there is something I connect to in her books. Another great 6 sentence Saturday.
ReplyDeleteI really want to read Home Safe!
ReplyDeleteAs for Ellen Hopkins, I have never tries anything by her. She seems to have a very distinct style, but I know I will have to read at least one of hers!
It's sad what kids have to do to survive. Loved your reviews, "toes curl"
ReplyDeleteI'm checking this one out!
I thought the Berg novel was just okay, but that's not my favorite genre, so I'm not very surprised. I'm glad you really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteAs for Tricks, I need to get my hands on that. I think I only read one Hopkins novel and am interested in reading more. Love seeing 5/5!
These are both intriguing books. Great short reviews.
ReplyDeleteI am a Berg fan and loved Home Safe. I had similar feelings as you when I read it. I related to Helen in many ways. I'm glad that you liked this book! Have you read "The Year of Pleasures"? It's another great book similar to this one in style.
