Six Sentence Saturday

Welcome to Six Sentence Saturday.
Where I try to express my thoughts on recent reads using only 6 sentences!!!!.
At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:

5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal

2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
I've been wanting to write about this for so long, but honestly felt very intimidated to give voice to my opinions after reading much deeper thoughts from others on this one. This is a book that you either love or hate. I loved it....Edgar, Almondine, the training of the dogs, and the character Ida, whose words were the foreshadowing of what was to come. I have never read Shakespeare's Hamlet, but I don't think you have to in order to enjoy this book. I was absorbed from the very first chapter right up to the gut-wrenching end. For me it was just a wonderful and moving read that touched my soul.

My Rating:

Little Bee by Chris Cleave
This book was fantastic from the very first sentence. I was pulled into the story and it never let go of me until the last page. It is a story about humanity and to what lengths would any of us go to help or save another human. Little Bee's story of her homeland and the tragedy that shapes her views of life, others, and herself is one that I won't soon forget. What makes it even more horrific is that the events that happened to Little Bee and her sister in their homeland of Nigeria are real. This book is one of the best I've read this year.

  1. It's an awesome idea! Very clever too. I have yet to read either of the books but I do own Edgar Sawtelle so I should be reading it sometime soon.

  2. Glad you enjoyed them so much. I've read so many mixed reviews of Edgar Sawtelle. I think the biggest complaint was it was way too unnecessarily wordy. I guess you didn't find it that way.

That North of Calcutta book looks good. Maybe it will be another 5 heart book. They seem to be scarce but when you find one, it is a true treasure.

Have a good holiday weekend and happy reading.

  3. Just started listening to Little Bee yesterday - it does grab you right from the beginning. Only on the second disk, but so far I love it!

  8. I want to read both of these! Little Bee more than the other because anything involving dogs I start crying even *before* anything happens! But it sounds like both of them are great, and I'm waiting to see them at the library sale!

  18. I noticed your Six Sentence Saturday is taking off in the blogosphere. :-)

I am glad to see you enjoyed Wroblewski's book. I've been on the fence about whether I want to read that one or not. I should just give it a try. Little Bee is on my TBR pile and I'm really looking forward to that one.

  19. Two great books at once! Edgar Sawtelle is one I've been considering, but your raves about Little Bee have me thinking I need to read it as well.
