Review: The Turnaround by George Pelecanos

Title and Author of book: The Turnaround by George Pelecanos

Fiction or non-fiction: Fiction
Genre: Adult literature
Where did I get the book: My public Library
Challenges that this fulfilled: none

Who recommended this book to me?: Kathy from Bermudaonion's Weblog.

Summarize the plot but don't give away the ending!
On a hot summer afternoon in 1972, three teenagers drove into an unfamiliar neighborhood and six lives were altered forever.
Thirty five years later, one survivor of that day reaches out to another, opening a door that could lead to salvation. But another survivor is now out of prison, looking for reparation in any form he can find it.

What did you like most about this book? I enjoyed the setting of the book which took place in the D.C. area. I also liked how the author took the time to develop the characters that played an integral part in the story.

What did you like least? There wasn't anything that I didn't like.

Have you read any other books by this author? This is my first Pelecanos book and it won't be my last!

What did you think of the main character? I felt that there were two main characters in this story one white and the other black. They had a chance encounter when they were young which changed both of their lives dramatically. I liked both of them by the end of the story and felt that they both tried to make amends for their mistakes and to live their lives with integrity.

What about the ending? Can I just say that sometimes it is very satisfying when someone gets what they deserve???? I liked the ending..(she laughs with a touch of devilish delight!!)

  7. I have Night Gardener, so I guess that will be my first Pelecanos. It does help to read good reviews about his writing. Thanks, Staci.

  8. I have Night Gardener, but I haven't read it yet. I might have to add this to the TBR list too!

  9. I have one or two of his books on my TBR Shelves and I look forward to giving him a try. Glad you liked his work!

  12. I've not tried any of his books - yet! I really want to though as I keep hearing they are very good. Now, I'm intrigued about that ending :)

  13. I'm so glad you liked this book! I always worry when I recommend books that the other person will be disappointed.

  14. Glad you liked it Staci. I had told I hadn't read any of his before but I think I'm going to have to. His stuff gets such good reviews.

  15. Holy crap, but you've left me intrigued with this one! Yep, yep, yep, straight to the wish list.

  16. Gosh, I really didn't care for this one so much at all when I read it back in May. I had alot of issues with it, enough in fact, to knock Pelecanos off any future reading lists altogether.

  17. I'm so glad you enjoyed reading this one. I'm hoping to read it this summer as well and I'm looking forward to it! Great review!

  18. You've made me very curious about this book. I'll have to get my hands on a copy.
