Booking Through Thursday

Suggested by Simon Thomas:

Have you ever been put off an author’s books after reading a biography of them? Or the reverse - a biography has made you love an author more?

Honestly, I haven't read very many biographies on authors at all so I guess my answer to this question will be short and sweet. The only person that I can recall that I read their book BECAUSE of reading something about them was Daniel Tammet. I watched some show that he was on and thought from the interview that he sounded interesting. I grabbed the book, Born On A Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant, from my library and read it in two days. I thought his biography fantastic and so very interesting. His mind and how he perceives things still boggles me to this day. So I guess reading his biography made me love him just a little bit more and I would certainly read another book that he wrote.

  1. I haven't read any author biographies. I'd be interested to read one though.

I hope you had a great day today Staci!!

  2. I do enjoy finding out about the lives of some of the authors I read but I don't always pursue it. But knowing more about them doesn't generally affect my opinion of their work. I try to let the work speak for itself.

  3. It wasn't a biography, but after I read that English wasn't Joseph Conrad's first language, I was that much more impressed with Heart of Darkness and even attempted Lord Jim.

  4. If you're interested, you might like Dr. Temple Grandin. She's written a couple of books about her autism and what she's learned about the differences in the way she thinks from "normal" people and the similarities in the way animals think to austic people. She's currently a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University.

I haven't read "Born on a Blue Day" so I don't know how they compare.

  5. I'm not familiar with the author you mention, but you've got me curious about his book.

I don't really read a lot of biographies, although I do read memoirs occasionally.
