posts the opening paragraph (maybe two) of a book
she decided to read based on the opening paragraph (s).
Feel free to grab the banner and play along!
My selection this week is from a much coveted book, The World of Downton Abbey.
My library had a copy and I snatched it up immediately so that I could make sure that I wanted to buy my very own copy! I will be delving into this one throughout the week, taking my time, savoring the story, and lingering over the wonderful pictures.
Welcome to the world of Downton Abbey, a place that has captivated an audience of millions, all following the lives of one family and their servants. Against the backdrop of a fading Edwardian society, we watch their personal dramas unfold and see them through the horrors and change that the First World War brought to Britain. This perhaps is what fascinates us: not just the beautiful scenery, the sumptuous costumes, nor even the skill of the actors, but the fact that we are experiencing something of how life was a hundred years ago. We notice the differences between our lives and theirs; the rigid social hierarchy, the nuances of etiquette, the stifling clothes and the battle for women to be heard. But alongside this, we see something that is the same: family life.
Would you continue reading this one
based on the opening paragraph?
I am curious about this one so I would certainly read more. Curious about the photos as well:)
ReplyDeleteThe photos are gorgeous!!!
DeleteI've read something that has evoked the same feelings in Cynthia Harrod Eagles Morland Dynasty series. The importance of family, family loyalty as against the history of the period- lots of nasty things which I do not like but as you say lots of beautiful stuff as well. Her series is also wonderful reading.
ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon these books you're talking about just the other day when I was at the library. I thought then that looked like something I would love. I will be adding it to my list, Mystica!!
DeleteI missed the whole TV series of this one and was so disappointed for doing so! So maybe the book will make up for it.
ReplyDeleteIf you have wi-fi then you can watch them on the PBS channel!!!
DeleteI haven't been watching the series... but itching to hear your thoughts on this... based on that one paragraph... I would keep going!
ReplyDeleteI haven't finished watching season two, to be honest I keep hearing that it's not meeting peoples expectations and becoming campy... which is making me lose interest.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I will finish though, if only to look at the costumes and setting.
Can't wait to read your thoughts on the book. I wonder if you feel it will add to your viewing experience.
Those people are CRAZY!! There's nothing campy about this series at all..at least IMHO..LOL!!
DeleteYES, YES, YES!! I love Downton Abbey and am currently going through withdrawal... this book may be just the cure I need :-)
ReplyDeleteMy withdrawals are painful too!!!! I hope to dive into this one over the weekend!
DeleteI've heard so much about the series on TV that I bet the book is excellent too. I have yet to see the series or read the book.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes indeed I would! I bought my copy sight unseen and love it! I enjoy reading "the story behind the story."
ReplyDeleteI thought I would humor my hubby by checking it out first!! :D
DeleteI bought it when I got my Season 2 bluray. Its such a beautifully made book. I like period costumes, and figured it be good reference for that. I haven't got a chance to read much. I just flipped through and skimmed some.
ReplyDeleteI am going to buy both seasons on DVD too!!!
DeleteYes, I'd keep reading. My hairdresser has a copy and she showed me the pictures. So beautiful.
ReplyDeleteNow that is a cool way to spend the time while you're getting your hair done!
DeleteYes, I would! There is a long wait on this book at my library.
ReplyDeleteI would--I've been watching the series.
ReplyDeleteI plan on watching the series soon, should I look at the book before?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't...leave you something to read after you finish watching the show!!!
DeleteI'd keep reading for sure because I love the show!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it fantastic!
