Smokin' Seventeen (Audio)- Bookish Thoughts #5

What Smokin' Seventeen is about: Stephanie Plum once again bumbles her way through apprehensions of bond skips while Lula and Grandma yuck it up as the comic relief. She's still torn between boring Joe (IMHO) and that mouth-watering Ranger! More cars are sacrificed and someone wants her dead!

Why I wanted to read it: I have been reading these books for a few years now, found myself getting bored with Stephanie and had actually thought about stopping until  Mary @ Bookfan Mary, suggested that I listen to them instead!

  • I loved the narrator, Lorelei King, on this audio. She has some crazy voices and made the characters come to life in a great way. I will admit to having some issues at the beginning with her voices for Joe and Ranger, but I was able to set that aside and just enjoy the story.
  • I will never, ever read this series again! I will forever listen to them on audio...a huge thank you to Mary!
  • Listening to this on audio helped me enjoy the story because I only listened to it in small sections. By doing this, I think it really downplayed the ineptness of Stephanie's lack of apprehension skills. It was much easier to take because I wasn't so focused on how stupid she really is!!
  • Lula and Grandma were the best part of the audio! I loved how the narrator really made them seem vivid to me and I could totally picture them in my head!
  • I laughed while driving to work! and then I laughed while driving home! That is a win-win for me!
I already have requested Explosive Eighteen on audio and am actually looking forward to listening to it. The audio has renewed my interest in the series and made it fun and fresh! Plus, I have to find out who she picks in the end.......my vote is for Ranger!

    1. It was a fun series in the beginning and then when you get into the later books you start to burn out on them. But I've been reading them so long I just keep doing it. Now with the audio they are way more enjoyable!

    1. It was really fun at the beginning but it started to lose steam along the way. The audio really made it more fun!

  5. I have yet to read these books....I've only listened to them...though I've only gotten through 2 of them, but did all the in-between-the-numbers books. LOL

    2. I really liked the in-between books...they were so out there and outrageously funny. I love stupid humor sometimes...just when you need a laugh.

  6. Wow, what an endorsement for audio! I have gotten away from audio these days, since I'd rather daydream in the car (not a great idea in any event!)

  7. I'm also one if those who best think these books are enjoyed on audio especially if Lorelei King is narrating. She is fantastic. I love Grandma - she is hilarious!

    1. Lorelei is fantastic!!! My friend just gave me Evanovich's newest book (not a Plum book) and she's the narrator for that one too. Will be putting it on my iTouch this weekend!!!

  9. The movie for the first book looks interesting. I never could get into this series. I tried to listen to a couple of the books on a long road trip but they couldn't hold my attention. I'm a better listener now though than I was then.

  11. Glad to know the audio is so entertaining and funny. I stopped reading at no. 14 and don't know if I'll see the movie of the first book. I would have preferred different actors - from the trailer, they didn't seem to fit the characters as well as they could.

  12. Got back from the movie a few hours ago. It was okay/good. It wasn't as quick/sharp as the books, but it was still pretty good. Not my dream cast, but I did love Sherri Shephard as Lula.
I stopped reading at 15, I think, and I'm okay with that. They all seem like the same book after a while.

    1. After a while you get a burned out on them. Audio was a great way to get back into them. I don't mind driving and listening to it in small snippets.

  16. I stopped reading this series somewhere around #8. I don't have any reviews on my blog, so it's been over 6 years since I last picked one up. I was getting so bored with the formulaic plot! However, I loved Lorelei King when I listened to Tall Grass (Sandra Dallas) that you may have convinced me to start listening to the remainder of this series. And I do want to see the movie (One for the Money)!
