Backseat Saints- Bookish Thoughts #4

What Backseat Saints is about:
Rose Mae Lolley is a fierce and dirty girl, long-suppressed under flowery skirts and bow-trimmed ballet flats. As "Mrs. Ro Grandee" she's trapped in a marriage that's thick with love and sick with abuse. Her true self has been bound in the chains of marital bliss in rural Texas, letting "Ro" make eggs, iron shirts, and take her punches. She seems doomed to spend the rest of her life battered outside by her husband and inside by her former self, until fate throws her in the path of an airport gypsy---one who shares her past and knows her future. The tarot cards foretell that Rose's beautiful, abusive husband is going to kill her. Unless she kills him first.

Why I wanted to read it: Many of my fellow bloggers have read and raved about this author's books. I have two of hers sitting on my shelves but never seemed to find the right time to read them. But with my resolution to do more reading from my shelves I decided that 2012 was the year for this one, plus it's the B title for my Alphabetical Challenge!

Source: My personal library, but the book has been languishing on my shelves for almost two years. I want to thank Grand Central Publishing for sending me this copy.

  • Holy cow...the opening of the book was fantastic and pulled me immediately into the story.
  • I love the southern style and the cadence of Rose's speech. I could hear her voice in my head as I was reading this one.
  • I was rooting for the REAL Rose the entire story...she touched my heart!
  • Her husband terrified me!! Domestic violence is just plain scary and I couldn't imagine being in the same situation as Rose.
  • The story was a fast read and it held my attention the entire way. I liked Jackson's writing style.
I still have The Girl Who Stopped Swimming sitting on my shelves and because I really enjoyed Backseat Saints, I'm sure I will get to this one sometime in the summer.

  8. I love Jackson, but The Girl Who Stopped Swimming is really unlike her subsequent books, like this one and Gods in Alabama, which are closely related.

  9. I enjoyed The Girl Who Stopped Swimming. Backseat Saints has been on my shelf for as long as it was on yours. I'm going to read it this year. Also thinking about getting her latest on audio. JJ does the narration.

  10. I'm reading A Grown Up Kind-Of Pretty by this author right now. I've read two of her books previously and enjoyed both although I can't say that I've read this one yet. I'm definitely going to read it at some point though. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this one so much!

  11. I have read a few books written by Jackson and I have the pleasure of discussing this book with her in late 2010. As always... I enjoy books much more after a discussion. There were a few themes that I noted while reading but didn't pick up for their importance to the message.

    Glad you enjoyed it.

  14. I won this book in a giveaway, and The Girl Who Stopped Swimming is one of those review copies languishing on my shelves. (It's comforting to know I'm not the only one with that problem!) I've heard nothing but good things about Jackson's books, and after reading your thoughts, I really must get to these soon!

  17. I received the audio book as gift for my birthday last year. As I am not a big fan of audio books, I didn't give the book much thought and placed it in the glove-box of my car. I ended up popping it into the cd player during a road trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. I wished I would have listened to when I received it.

    1. Yay! I'm glad that you enjoyed listening to it! I have thought that I wouldn't care for books on audio so I just stayed away from them. But, I've taken the advice of some great blogging friends who listen to a lot of books and they were right! Audio is such a pleasure!

  18. I was so hoping to like this one as much as you did but it kind of fell flat for me. I think I might have liked it better if I had read the first book before this one.

  19. I have The Girl Who Stopped Swimming on my bookshelf but I haven't heard of this one ... domestic violence is a subject close to home but I have to say I found the line in the synopsis "unless she kill's him first" kind of intriguing hahaha ;)
