It took me a while because as you can see they really blend into the dirt, rock, and grass! After making a little border around them with sticks I breathed a sigh of relief knowing that soon I will get to watch 4 little Killdeer run around my yard!!!
How wonderful! I love Killdeer but have never seen babies! I hope all four make it! We get to see Gambrel's Quail, but this year, because of the drought?, there are very few babies.
ReplyDeleteGreat pics, Staci. We have Killdeer in our area and I'm always amused at their broken wing act - it's quite effective, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteOh, I love these photos! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteShe did not attack? Here birds always attack even though you are 100 m away, evil things
ReplyDeleteAwesome PICS Staci!! And what a cool defense tactic they have! Off to check that site out! :):):):):):):):):):):):)
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that your killdeer was behaving a bit like our Australian plovers -they make a dreadful noise when you go near their nest, but they don't pull the broken wing trick. A quick google tells me that killdeers are plovers. How fascinating. I hope we get to see some photos of the youngsters when they come too.
ReplyDeleteThat's great! I'm glad you were able to find the eggs before running them over. I don't know if I've ever seen these birds before. I'm going to have to look them up and see if they are ever in our area.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful surprise to have in your yard! Terrific picture of mom trying to distract you.
ReplyDeleteHere's my Snapshot: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2011/07/saturday-snapshot-july-2.html
What great pictures. Hope the babies all make it. We have blue jays who had babies in our bushes and they've been dive bombing our cats keeping them away.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, the broken wing trick. Pretty clever, eh? Great photo.
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe the eggs are still in the nest up there. We saw baby killdeer here a while ago. I just love to watch them. Keep us posted on your babies!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen killdeer. I never would have known to look for the nest. Good save, Staci!
ReplyDeleteStaci, how clever and what a great capture. I had never heard of "killdeer", but was familiar with plover, which we have here. Cool pictures.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! There is such hope and beauty in those unhatched eggs.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures, and what a sweet story! It will be a joy having the babies around one they're ready to come out :)

ReplyDeleteAwesome that you have a Kildeer nest in your yard. The only place I've ever seen them nest is in the landscaping around a nearby golf course. Looking forward to nestling pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and smart bird! I've never seen a killdeer before. The eggs are pretty too:)
ReplyDeleteHow lucky to have a fantastic chance to observe the life cycle of these birds. I love the way Killdeer walk and their call as well. Good pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to have this in your yard!
ReplyDeleteBirds are apparently drawn to you! :) We once had a nest of them in our landscaping right near our front door and boy do they make a lot of noise when they feel threatened. For a while we had to go in and out of the garage so we didn't stir up a ruckus!
ReplyDeleteHow cute?! I love nature and photos of nature, especially since I live in a concrete jungle. I look forward to pics of the babies.
