Six Sentence Saturday - Movie Review Version

Mamma Mia! The Movie
I have never seen the Broadway version of this but rest assured that I plan to see it before I die! I absolutely loved this movie and was singing some of the songs right along with the characters!! What a fun story and the way they took those ABBA songs and built a story from them was incredible. The location of the movie was to die for...how I long to stay at the inn and swim in those blue/green waters!! I thought everyone did a great job of singing and yes, I'll admit that there were a few cheesy moments, but I didn't care. I cried some, laughed some, and did a lot of dancing!!! Now I want to download a bunch of ABBA songs to my iPod!!!
My Rating;

Julie and Julia
It's no secret that I hated the book that Julie Powell wrote and frankly, I disliked Julie Powell immensely. The only reason I wanted to watch this movie was to see Meryl Streep bring Julia Child to life and she did not let me down!! Boy, did the movie producers sugarcoat Julie Powell in this movie...she's fairly nice, doesn't drop the F-bomb in every sentence, and it didn't hurt that they chose Amy Adams as Powell (she's someone most people like). I would like to see a movie based on Julia Child's book with Meryl Streep, now that is a movie I would see in the theater!! Meryl Streep makes this movie and I enjoyed it just for her portrayal of the fascinating Julia.  Overall, not a bad way to spend 2 hours!!

  1. Looks like you had a Meryl Streep mini-fest going on! I loved both of those also, but what I liked so much about Mamma Mia wasn't even the movie per se but the additional proof of Meryl Streep's AMAZING versatility! Is there nothing she can't do?!!!

  3. I saw both of those movies at the theater and I enjoyed Julie and Julia more than Mamma Mia, which dragged at some points for me. The music was great, though.

  4. I loved both of these movies too. We own Mamma Mia and watch it when my daughter and I want to watch something fun and light. Julie and Julia was very good too and is on my wishlist to own also. That Meryl Streep is pretty darn versatile isn;t she?

  5. I love that you turned the Six Sentence review to a movie version!
    I adore Meryl Streep, she's an amazing actress. I haven't seen Mamma Mia and I must soon! It sounds like a movie I would love. I grew up with my mother listening to Abba music when I was a teenager. I didn't appreciate it that much then but I do like their music now. I loved Julie and Julia and Meryl stole the show in this movie. I totally agree with you about the way they portrayed Julie. I did like the book but didn't care for Julie's language and attitudes. They made her more into a sweet,naive character than the true character of Julie.

  6. ITA with you about the book Julie and Julia. Julie Powell was SO grating and crass. I had to abandon it because I couldn't take her attitude. This is one of the very few times I thought the movie was MUCH better than the book - but that's only because it was a blend of Powell's book and Julia Child's My Life in France - and also because Meryl Streep's performance was flawless. I also really liked Jane Lynch in that movie too. It was nice to see her branch out and do something other than comedy.

  8. If you ever get the chance to see the stage version of Mama Mia, do it. We were dancing in the aisles at the end of the show. It was fantastic. Some of the singing in the movie made me cringe but I enjoyed the movie.
    Meryl Streep is the best thing in Julie and Julia!

  11. I thought Mamma Mia was fun, but I loved Julie and Julia! I haven't read the book, but I must admit that the fact that you hated it has increased my interest in reading it! I have zero interest in reading her second book, though...

  12. I did not read Powell's book but adored Streep as Child, I also am quite a sucker for musicals, having grown up on them as a kid, so I got a big kick out of a sing Streep too and just for the record I like cheesy!

  13. I couldn't agree with you more on both these movies/books! I honestly didn't get through the Julie Powell book and that's not like me. But I loved Mamma Mia and I have seen the Broadway play - which was good but (dare I say this?) the movie was better or at least as good. Kind of strange thing to think I know (you can't beat a live play after all) but the movie was just so much fun! Great reviews!
