Review: Undone by Karin Slaughter

Title and Author of book: Undone by Karin Slaughter
Fiction or non-fiction: Fiction
Genre: Best criminal thriller psycho book this year!!!!!
Where did I get the book: My public Library
Challenges that this fulfilled: none, I'm just a big fan.

Who recommended this book to me? From the very first time I read a Slaughter book I was immediately hooked. Anytime something new of hers is to be published I'm first in line!!!

Summarize the plot but don't give away the ending!

Undone brings together, for the first time, the small-town residents of Grant County, Georgia, and the hard-bitten cops of Georgia’s Bureau of Investigation in a relentlessly gripping novel.

Sarah Linton has fled to Atlanta seeking refuge from the terrible act that ripped her life apart in Grant County. But when a tortured young woman becomes a patient in her ER, she’ll find herself deeply ensnared in a case that rips the lid off secrets as dark and complex as they are disturbing. When special agents Will Trent and Faith Mitchell join forces to probe into the life of the victim, these three embark on an investigation that will change all of them forever.

What did you like most about this book? After reading her last Grant County book, I have to admit that I was PISSED at the ending. I screamed, wanted to throw the book against the wall, I couldn't believe that Slaughter would have the nerve to do what she did. She ended up leaving a secret website for her readers in the book so that she could explain herself. After reading that, I understood, didn't make it any easier, but I did understand. So I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this one up. Let me just tell you that she combined her characters from her two series and it was perfection!!! Everything is in this book, smart characters, a fantastic plot, gruesome torture that made my stomach turn, heartbroken, and broken people. There wasn't a misstep anywhere in this novel! I loved it all!!!!

What did you like least? Not a thing, not a thing. I think this is her best one yet!

Have you read any other books by this author? I've read all of her books. They rock!! Slaughter is the real deal. After I became turned off by the same old garbage from Patricia Cornwell, (I mourn the loss of the real Kay Scarpetta that she created in her earlier books) I needed to find an author who could capture me again with a female lead character. Slaughter has done that consistently with each book she puts out. She hasn't sold her soul to be on the NY Times Bestseller list...she's a true artist.

What about the ending? I tried to figure out who the serial killer was and just when I thought I had put all of the pieces together, I was thrown a loop!!! Excellent ending.

So obviously, you can tell I love this author. If you haven't read her books and you like psychological thrillers, she will deliver!!! If you've read her books and haven't gotten to this one yet...GET YOUR TUSH INTO GEAR!!!!
One of the BEST books I've read this year!

  2. Ok....soooooooooooo today....I love U even more...and I quote..."I mourn the loss of the real Kay Scarpetta that she created in her earlier books".....AMEN to that....this is a great review!!! I am truly shocked though that if U were mad enough to yell and almost throw the book that U still say it was amazing....was it because of the website U read after the fact??? :):):):):):):):):):):):)

  3. I love her even though I hate gore(!) and I *love* her website - she is just the most fun! I even entered her contest - the one where you show your pet reading one of her books! (alas, I didn't win, but some of those entries were so amazingly cute and funny I laughed for days!).

I love your review and the format (which I would like to "borrow" sometime!!! :--)

  8. I have her first one to read, but now you've pushed her onto my to read this year list! My mother reads her also (we share books and authors frequently) so i was aware of her. Lovely review, and interesting that you hated the ending of the previous book but still tried the next one! that's a loyal reader. And how wonderful that you loved the next one! so Undone goes on my list too.....thanks, Staci!

  9. I'm so with you on Patricia Cornwall's work, I was a total fan, until her writing style went to poo!
Totally awesome review, makes me want to pick this one up. The last book I tried of Karin Slaughter's was A Faint Cold Fear and I had trouble getting into it, doesn't look like this one would have the same problem!!

  10. This is yet another author who I have a ton of books by but haven't read yet. Is this a series I should read in order?

  11. You have absolutely no idea how excited you just made me to try out her books!!! Before book blogging, I used to read almost nothing but thrillers, but now I too rarely fit one in. And I have to say that I miss them. Sounds like she's just the pick-me-up I need. LOL...serial killers as pick-me-ups...now that sounds rather warped, huh?
And I couldn't agree more with you about Patricia Cornwell. My husband and I both used to love her books so much, but we ended up so disgusted with the way she changed that neither of us has read any of her books in years.

  12. I have two of her books in my personal library including Undone and I am really dying to read them both. I love psychological thrillers and was looking for fresh and new to me author for a long time until this review. Now I think I found one.

  14. I've read a few of these and have a few more around here, but need to get them in order. I read the others out of order and I hate that. They were really good books though.

  15. After that review, how could you NOT want to read her books?? You have me intrigued...so as someone who hasn't read these books, what one would you recommend to start with? I like the idea of the Georgia locale of this one. I will definitely have to venture into these books because I think I'm missing out on a great author. I love what you said about not selling out to be on the NYT list. Awesome review, Staci!! Bravo!

  16. Julie- To answer your question, yes it was what the author wrote to her readers that helped to cool my jets. To me that says a lot about how she views her readers-that they're valuable to her!!!

Rhapsody- I borrowed it from Kailana, who borrowed it from Dewey. So please feel free to borrow it!! :)

  18. you sound like somebody who would enjoy the debut book by Eugene Kachmarsky, called Let Slip the Dogs of Love (Suburban Legends of the Living and the Dead). it's an anthology that contains a number of stories in the psychological thriller genre. think Fargo or Barton Fink. intensely messed up with a twisted sense of humor as well. google the title. it's online at amazon and barnesandnoble. you won't be sorry.
