Manic Monday and a book review

Manic Monday #148

What is the biggest mistake you made in 2008 and will not make again in 2009?

Trusting certain people. I must be one of the most naive and gullible people walking the earth. But no more. My heart is hardened and I will not bend!

Do you make New Year's resolutions?

I use to but not going to do it this year.

Why or why not?

What's the point? I never follow through with them!!

Who do you nominate as “Man or Woman of the Year” for 2008?
Big Mistake
What was your greatest accomplishment in 2008?

Losing some weight and starting to put my health and well-being on the front burner instead of the back burner. I'm no good to anyone if I'm falling apart.

I had to get up pretty early this morning...4:00 a.m.! In order to take my oldest son to the Amtrak station. So when I got back home I sat down with a hot cup of coffee and finished Sweet Life. Here is my goofy review!! (I wished that I sounded more scholarly but oh well)

Sweet Life by Mia King
From the back cover: When her husband, Paul, gets a new job, Marissa Price leaves the island of Manhattan for the island of Hawaii. Paradise seems like the perfect place to find herself, save her marriage, and reconnect with her eight-year-old daughter. But once there, Marissa discovers her new life is less about beaches and beautiful sunsets and more about cows and lava flows. Their new "home" is a fixer-upper at best. But what most needs fixing-her marriage- is the first to crumble when her husband announces he wants some time apart to find himself.

bookshelves: read, winter-reading-challenge-2009 (edit)
status: Read in December, 2008
review: This book is absolutely sweet! I really liked the author's first book Good Things and was not at all disappointed with her follow-up. Set in New York and then Hawaii, this book flowed very well and was a very enjoyable, easy read. At first I have to admit that I wasn't too crazy about the main character Marissa. I found her to be a very picky, hard-to-please, label crazy, self-centered brat. But after her family lands in Hawaii and things start to fall apart her character took on a little more dimension. The cast of supporting characters were very believable and I was absolutely pulled into the main island of Hawaii. The recipes in the back sound delicious but I'm not that ambitious so I settled for just reading them and dreaming of actually visiting Hawaii in order to sample some of these dishes.

  1. Great answers for your Monday madness, and thank you for yet another great book recommendation! Next time I'm stuck I'm just coming here!
And it's tough thing, trusting people. I got really screwed in the past couple of years by people that I trusted, and know better now. I won't let myself get sucked in again so easily, that's for sure!
    Happy New Year!

  2. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the vote!
Your number one....Oh my Hell! I could have written the exact.same. thing!

    Happy Monday

  3. I dont think your book review is goofy! Congrats on the weight loss.

  4. thanks for sharing your answers.

i was happy indeed when i resigned.

  5. My goal is to get back on track.

    I played too :)

  6. I am sorry there were people in your life this year that betrayed your trust, Staci. It's such a shame when people take advantage like that.

I do plan to set goals for this coming years, but I prefer not to think of them as resolutions. LOL Yeah, I'm not fooling anyone, not even myself.

I loved your review! There's nothing goofy about it. :-)

  7. Hi Staci,

thank you for your visit and comment.
You know what they say, the grass is always greener out there...sometimes i wish i lived in a busier place!

sending you warm wishes from Spain
and yes...Obama is definitely the man of the year !!

  8. I'm sorry you were betrayed, but don't let that person make your heart hard. If you do, then she has won! It's always better to trust with a soft heart, even if occasionally that trust isn't appreciated or rewarded. Congrats on the weight loss!! Thanks for coming to my blog, and I've now got you on my sidebar bloglist!

  9. I hadn't heard about this book before I read your review - it sounds good.

I really like your blog's background - it's very cheerful!

  10. I live not far from NYC and have visiting Hawaii (my sister lives on Oahu) three times over the last six years, so this book sounds interesting to me based on locations alone. Thanks for the review!

  11. Happy New Year! I've added you to my "Blogs That Matter" list. I'll be areound more... ;)

  12. I made the mistake of trusting a certain person last year. That person made me feel very naive, gullible and a tad worthless :(

  13. Happy New Year Staci! I make goals for the New Year as I tend not to stick to my resolutions either. I hear you on the trust issues. I've had a few people betray my trust this year and it was very hurtful. I'm learning to let things go and be more careful and follow my instincts. I have both of Mia King's books on my TBR bookshelves and look forward to reading them.

  14. I just started Good Things last night and really like it so far. I'm going to have to check out some of the challenge sites that you have listed here. I need to get some inspiration for good worth while books.
