Mitch would spend every Thursday with his Grandma and Grandpa when he was little. He would love to ride the tractor with his Gpa and go out into the field to take food to the cattle. This is one of Gpa's favorite pictures and I love it too!!!

Smokin' Seventeen (Audio)- Bookish Thoughts #5

What Smokin' Seventeen is about: Stephanie Plum once again bumbles her way through apprehensions of bond skips while Lula and Grandma yuck it up as the comic relief. She's still torn between boring Joe (IMHO) and that mouth-watering Ranger! More cars are sacrificed and someone wants her dead!

Why I wanted to read it: I have been reading these books for a few years now, found myself getting bored with Stephanie and had actually thought about stopping until Mary @ Bookfan Mary, suggested that I listen to them instead!

I loved the narrator, Lorelei King, on this audio. She has some crazy voices and made the characters come to life in a great way. I will admit to having some issues at the beginning with her voices for Joe and Ranger, but I was able to set that aside and just enjoy the story.
I will never, ever read this series again! I will forever listen to them on audio...a huge thank you to Mary!
Listening to this on audio helped me enjoy the story because I only listened to it in small sections. By doing this, I think it really downplayed the ineptness of Stephanie's lack of apprehension skills. It was much easier to take because I wasn't so focused on how stupid she really is!!
Lula and Grandma were the best part of the audio! I loved how the narrator really made them seem vivid to me and I could totally picture them in my head!
I laughed while driving to work! and then I laughed while driving home! That is a win-win for me!

I already have requested Explosive Eighteen on audio and am actually looking forward to listening to it. The audio has renewed my interest in the series and made it fun and fresh! Plus, I have to find out who she picks in the end.......my vote is for Ranger!

Backseat Saints- Bookish Thoughts #4

What Backseat Saints is about:

Why I wanted to read it: Many of my fellow bloggers have read and raved about this author's books. I have two of hers sitting on my shelves but never seemed to find the right time to read them. But with my resolution to do more reading from my shelves I decided that 2012 was the year for this one, plus it's the B title for my Alphabetical Challenge!

Holy cow...the opening of the book was fantastic and pulled me immediately into the story.
I love the southern style and the cadence of Rose's speech. I could hear her voice in my head as I was reading this one.
I was rooting for the REAL Rose the entire story...she touched my heart!
Her husband terrified me!! Domestic violence is just plain scary and I couldn't imagine being in the same situation as Rose.
The story was a fast read and it held my attention the entire way. I liked Jackson's writing style.

I still have The Girl Who Stopped Swimming sitting on my shelves and because I really enjoyed Backseat Saints, I'm sure I will get to this one sometime in the summer.

My selection this week is from a review book titled, "Irish Lady." I chose to read this one because it takes place in Ireland and it has the magical element of blending the past with the present...let's hope it is a good read!

Four centuries had passed and yet I had not forgotten the smell of charred wood nor the searing heat of a fire bent on destruction. I opened my eyes and saw the leap of flame against shadow, gutted dwellings, the silhouette of a church steeple outlined against an orange sky--an entire world engulfed in fire.

My husband totally surprised me with these flowers yesterday for our 17th Wedding Anniversary! I actually scrapbooked the last time I received flowers from him and remember writing that I probably wouldn't get flowers until 2023! Boy, was I wrong! I love the whole arrangement and the vase screams me! And if you can believe this....he picked it all out!! He gets me....he really gets me!!!

The A.B.C. Murders- Bookish Thoughts #3

What this book is about: Someone is murdering people in alphabetical order by name and location and has dared Poirot to try to catch them!

Why I wanted to read it: I've been meaning to read more Agatha Christie this year so that is one reason. The second reason is that I'm vowing to read more from my own shelves. Thirdly, I am participating in a the 52 Books 52 Weeks Challenge and I'm doing it with a twist by reading in alphabetical order! So, this is the perfect choice isn't it?? Get it, A.B.C. Murders......alphabetical reading challenge???? I'm easily amused!

Source: My personal library, but the book was purchased for a quarter from my library sale cart.

I loved the story being sort of narrated by Captain Hastings. This made the story fun and engaging for me.
The book flowed and was a fast read.
Poirot is so quirky and cool...how could I not like him? More Poirot!!!
I figured out who the real murderer was about 10 pages before the story ended...made me feel like I was playing the board game Clue (which I loved).

I am now addicted to all things Christie and have even listed all of her Poirot and Marple books on my challenge blog. I'm also inspired to listen to some of these books on audio. Has anyone out there listened to these and if so, any suggestions?

About the book:
Maria Sutton's memoir, The Night Sky is the culmination of her forty-three year search for her father. Without knowing the spelling of her father's name, or his date and place of birth, Maria was able to find him - proving that with unwavering determination, anything is possible.

My first thoughts after finishing: "This was a powerful and moving journey...well done!"

I like to read a memoir that speaks to me on some level and after perusing the information Maria sent me and doing a bit of research of my own, confirmed that this was one I had to read. I picked it up right after I finished The Lost Wife, which was a book that wounded me to the soul. I thought it fitting that I would read more about the affects of WWII on people who survived the war but now found themselves labeled as a Displaced Person. Maria's mother is really a strong woman and I know that throughout the book she greatly downplayed and even tried to distance herself from her experience. She was put into horrible conditions and had to make crucial and heart wrenching decisions that would impact not only herself, but her two young daughters. I was amazed at the tenacity and perseverance that Maria exhibited as she began her forty-year long quest to find the answers to questions and to get a family history that could slightly resemble her own husband's. I enjoyed reading about the methods that Maria used to find her information and couldn't believe the amount of red tape and just plain old waiting that she experienced.

I am always amazed at how little I truly know about this time period and once again loved how I learned new facts about the war. I had never heard of the massacre in the Katyn Forest of Poland. I learned more about Stalin's rule reading this book than I ever did from high school history class. I loved learning about Poland and the Ukraine and WWII from Maria's mother's perspective.

My emotional moment while reading this book was the story of Maria's Uncle Wasyl. I was thrilled that about the outcome of her search for him, yet at the same time it quite literally broke my heart.

I highly recommend this book to those that enjoy memoirs and moving family stories. Maria has taken a snapshot of the life of displaced persons and shown us their trials and within that story she has also found her identity.

I was looking through my photos and realized that I had pictures of each of my boys taken on the same day with the ice cold water pump outside my parent's house. You may notice that Mitch- on the left, seems to be enjoying his time with the water. I love the little butt crack showing and you can tell that he has his underwear on backwards. He liked having the picture on the front! But poor Marc is obviously shocked by the cold water..check out his little belly!! Oh, how I miss those days when my boys were little!!

My first DNF in over two years!

Synopsis:
Joe has a beautiful house, a great job, no commitments - and he likes it like that. All he needs is a quiet house-sitter for his rambling old place by the sea. When Tess turns up on his doorstep, he’s not sure she’s right for the job. Where has she come from in such a hurry? Her past is a blank and she’s a bit of an enigma. But there’s something about her - even though sparks fly every time they meet.
And it looks like she’s here to stay

Well, this one sure didn't go as planned. The synopsis sounded great and the setting was one that I would like to run off to. But the book in action was just not working for me. When I went back over to Goodreads to mark it as a DNF, I started to read what others thought about this book and I found out that the author just writes organically without a plan. Um, I wish I would've known that earlier because then the crazy writing would have actually made sense. She doesn't use tenses correctly and sometimes she shows up as the narrator. All in all, it boils down to confusing and frustrating.

I haven't given up on a book in over two years, friends! But lately I've been feeling that I'm reading too much for others and not enough for myself. So, I put it down because I have so many other great books waiting for me and I had already given this one 3 days that I can never get back! Ugh!

I may pick it up again....maybe this summer? maybe not, but guess what? I feel absolutely no stress about not finishing it. That in and of itself is progress baby!!!

It was in June of 1935 that I came home from my ranch in South America for a stay of about six months. It had been a difficult time for us out there. Like every one else, we had suffered from world depression. I had various affairs to see to in England that I felt could only be successful if a personal touch was introduced. My wife remained to manage the ranch.
I need hardly say that one of my first actions on reaching England was to look up my old friend, Hercule Poirot.

A Weekend With Mr. Darcy- I purchased this one for 1.99 for my Kindle. I squealed with delight when I saw the price and after reading and loving Dreaming of Mr. Darcy, I knew I had to get this one.

Nadia Knows Best- I'm working very hard not to go overboard with review books ( I decided on no more than 20 for the year. I can only get 6 more before I'm done), but when this one was offered by Sourcebooks/NetGalley I had to get it. I adore this author!! Can't wait.

The dogs loved their Christmas presents that Santa left them. Each puppy got a no-stuffing animal chew toy. One was a skunk and the other was a raccoon. They do trade with each other on occasion and Lily loves throwing it in your lap....soaking wet!!!

The Lost Wife: Bookish Thoughts #2

What this story is about: During the last moments of calm in prewar Prague, Lenka, a young art student, and Josef, who is studying medicine, fall in love. With the promise of a better future, they marry- only to have their dreams shattered by the imminent Nazi invasion. Like so many others, they are torn apart by the currents of war.

Why I wanted to read it: I was moved by some of my favorite blogger's (Kaye and Jill) reviews of this book last year and absolutely knew that I had to make sure that this book was read in 2012.

I am only on page 41 and I'm absolutely captivated by this author's writing
"He laughs. And in his laugh I hear bliss. I hear feet dancing, the rush of skirts twirling. The sound of children. Is that the first sign of love? You hear in the person you're destined to love the sound of those yet to be born." (p.33) After reading this I had tears in my eyes.
I love how the author uses colors in her writing to convey thoughts and emotions. I could picture them in my mind as I was reading. This style of writing evoked very powerful emotions from me.
I find the Jewish wedding ceremony to be very beautiful and full of meaning. "I am my beloved and my beloved is mine."
I learned about the artists Shiele, Fritta and Kokoschka. By spending a little time on the internet looking up these artists and viewing their work I was able to understand Lenka's passion for art and how she painted.
my heart is aching at the knowledge that so many Jewish people had to wonder what did they do wrong to cause this hatred from their neighbors. So many little children scared and parents not being able to quell their fears. The idea of not knowing what was going to happen to you and your family in the next week, day, hour, and minutes.
Even in the darkest days of the death camps there were still babies being born. It was reaffirming that family and love are some of the most vital components of our lives.
Never underestimate the power of music. It broke my heart how the prisoners reacted to music..they could forget their hunger, their suffering, the cruelty that they may have experienced earlier that day. All that mattered was the music and how it brought them together.
I am amazed that every time I read a story about WWII, the Holocaust, internment camps, displaced people that I can always learn about unknown events that one will never hear about in high school.
I am sickened at what we do to each other. How can one human treat another in such a horrific fashion. My mind can not accept these atrocities, yet I know they happened.
I have so many sticky notes throughout this book that it would be overwhelming to read them all listed here. But I think I can sum up my reading experience with this sentence.......

Is it possible to die from a broken heart because of a story that touched me to the very center of my soul?

Books Can Be Deceiving- My Bookish Thoughts #1

What it's about:
Lindsey is getting into her groove as the director of the Briar Creek Public Library when a New York editor visits town, creating quite a buzz. Lindsey's friend Beth wants to sell the editor her children's book, but Beth's boyfriend, a famous author, gets in the way. When they go to confront him, he's found murdered-and Beth is the prime suspect.

Why I wanted to read it: Found it while browsing the new book section in the library. I work in a library...this centers around Lindsey who works in a library...the LIBRARY is why I wanted to read it!!

I loved the setting...what a quaint town that is totally screaming my name and by the water. Bliss!
This sounds like a library I would love to work at and also be a patron!!
I loved how the characters were reading books that I've read or want to read.
The mystery was fairly easy to solve but that didn't bother me one bit. I thought it was so much fun that I can't wait for the next one!!
There are so many cozy series out there and I feel like I'll never get caught up but this is book one and I loved it so I'm planning on becoming wrapped up in this one.
Who wouldn't love to read a book that helps to add the ones already out-of-control TBR pile??!!
Enjoyable way to spend an afternoon...highly recommend for those that love cozies!

I have a bad habit of checking out the Friend of the Library sale cart whenever I stop by my local library. It never fails that I bring home something with me. I think I hit pay dirt when I stopped on Thursday to return books. My husband just smiled as I asked for a couple of bucks just in case I found something I wanted!!

Deep in the Valley- I'm aware of this author thanks to Kaye and Mary!
Clouds of Witness- reading Jane's blog (Fleur Fisher Reads) has made me keen on reading Sayers. Thanks, Jane!
The Widower- this one just caught my eye. Checked it out on Goodreads and it sounds like it could be promising.
Casting Off- brand new paperback for .50 cents!! How could I go wrong? Plus, this one has been on my TBR list for a while. I love books about knitting even though I have no clue how to knit myself and added bonus the setting is Ireland!

New Year, New Direction......

As I sit here wondering in what direction I want to take my main blog, I have been reflecting on what I'm really looking for when I read a fellow book lover's reviews. I've come to the conclusion that I could really care less about the literary value (so to speak), and taking the story apart and exploring the deeper meaning that the author implied (not that I ever did this). What I'm looking for is how this book affected the reader. Would I feel the same way? Could I make a connection with one of the characters? Would this be a story that would haunt me for days? Would I be screaming at the top of my lungs for everyone to read it??? What I'm looking for is the word IMPACT. So I'm thinking that I'm going to veer away from 'reviews' and free flow my thoughts on the books that I read for 2012. What that means is I'm going to open a post up on Blogger before I open my book. When the mood strikes me to record I will do that using bullet points. I am sure I will find myself adding a lot of things that struck a chord with me as I'm reading. Then when I'm finished with the book, I can look over those points and hone them a bit, smooth out the rough edges and then hit that lovely button "publish post." To me this feels like freedom and goes along with my OLW Project (scrapbooking) that I'm venturing into this year- so I'mRENEWing the way I talk about books and renewing my love for reading and blogging. I don't want pressure...I don't want to feel like I have to impress anyone...I don't want to worry whether or not I've offended an author because I didn't like their book...I don't want to have constraints put on my joy of the written word. So with that in mind, I'm also cutting back on review copies and being on a someone else's schedule. If a book shows up unsolicited, I will decide whether I read it or NOT. I've been saying NO a lot more lately to book offers and author requests. I will accept reviews of books that speak to me. I want to read from my own shelves, I want to explore authors at a whim, I want to be real, in the present, and authentic. I feel such optimism and excitement about this....so I'm off to open up my first post for The Lost Wife....and I welcome the changes with open arms!

It's hard to believe that another year is almost over! I've had a great year with the number of books that really touched me in some manner. My favorite book list comprises of books that made me laugh, smile, cry, freak out, become enlightened and at times I kept the characters in my heart for days.

Carrie Goes Off the Map

Reason for reading it: I love British chick lit!
~ I love Phillipa Ashley's writing style! It never gets old and she always delivers a fun, cheeky, and sometimes steamy British Chick lit with more depth than realized at first glance. Her characters seem so real to me and oftentimes I have found myself wanting to be friends with them. I love learning British slang and there's so much of it in this one. I would love to try it out at work but I think a few of them would get me sent to the Principal's office!! If you're looking for a getaway book look no further than this one!

The Mercy (Rose Trilogy #3)

Reason for reading it: I needed a gentle read, plus had to finish the trilogy!
~ You all know that I love Amish fiction and in my opinion no one does it better than Beverly! This was everything that I wanted in a final book of the series. I loved how all of the pieces came together and it seemed so very authentic. Lewis' books always give me a sense of peace and serenity, but I recognize too that Amish life isn't as simplistic and wonderful as some of us outsiders may think. Lewis has captured the modern day Amish and how the English world continues to intrude on their lifestyle. She does a wonderful job of taking worldly problems and putting that Amish spin on them...excellent series!

Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum #16 (duh?))

Reason for reading it: Started the series a long time ago.....
~ A while back I told myself- enough of the Plum books! But then I was at the library, saw it on the shelf and said what the heck...read it! This one put a smile on my face and made me laugh on more than one occasion. I think Grandma and Lula were in rare form in this book. I also enjoyed that Stephanie is loosening up a bit and kissing on both Morelli and Ranger. But she's still a fool in my opinion for even thinking twice about Joe...I'm a Ranger girl all the way! Fun hijinks, fun story, made for an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon!

The Night Circus

Reason for reading it: Many bloggers loved it, while many were like "meh"
~ This book started out so very slow for me that I almost ditched it. Then as if one of the magicians from the story put a spell on me, I found myself deeply involved by page 100!! The story grabbed me and captured my imagination and I loved this world that the author created. The characters were interesting and I couldn't get enough of their stories. And then the last couple of chapters happened....and left me pissed off!! I hated how the book ended....I expected this apocalyptic showdown between the two magicians or something spectacular...but, no. (Don't you hate the way I ended this review? Yep, that's how I felt when I finished this book!)

But with the passing years comes a reckoning, and Feng must reconcile herself with the sacrifices and terrible choices she has made in order to assure her place in the family and society—even as the violent, relentless tide of revolution engulfs her country.

First thoughts after I finished: "That was a very depressing book."

I'm absolutely intrigued by the role of women in China and read almost any book that tells their story. This one sounded so wonderful and full of promise. I have to admit that it started out very slow for me and the way the author wrote had me feeling uncomfortable and out-of-step with the fluidity of the words. Eventually that seemed to work itself out and the story moved along and I found myself pulled into Feng's life story. Unfortunately for Feng, the author, and myself, I just could NOT for the life of me like this woman. She took her hatred and anger to the extreme and with that she also stole my ability to find something redeeming in her as a person. I understand what the author was trying to convey and I think his writing is beautiful, but I wish that at some point he would've created a character who had more layers and was slowly broken down. Instead, he seemed to fast forward the years and left out important character building qualities along the way.

Recommend? For those that want to read books that take place in China and during the revolution, I think you would enjoy this. I did really enjoy the Further Reading section and took note of books the author listed that I would like to read in the future. My lack of caring for the main character is on me...no one else.

Book Hooked Blog: " Just don't go into it expecting a detailed history of the Cultural Revolution - I think it actually reads better if you are already familiar to some extent with Mao and his policies and the sweep of the Cultural Revolution. I think this would be a good book to read along with Balzac and the Little Chinese

Seamstress."

Raging Bibliomania: "I did enjoy this book and fell into the pages quite easily. It was a story that was chock full of strong emotions and starred a character who made difficult and unpardonable choices. In the end, I think that readers of this book will grow to understand Feng and the sacrifices she made in order to preserve the very heart of herself. A very interesting offering that somewhat surprised me."

Why I've Been MIA- Renovations!

This looks like what I've been living in for the past month!! I know it's a crazy time to do a renovation but everything lined up for us: money, time, and the contractor to do the drywall work. We gutted our bedroom to the outside walls and had Retrofoam spray insulation in the walls. This room has been the coldest place in the entire house. Our home is over 100+ years old. It once was a schoolhouse. So needless to say the insulation that was put in wasn't really up to snuff. We can't believe how much of a difference having that foam in our room makes. We heat all winter with just our wood stove and our room has been a very comfortable 65-67 degrees!! Amazing is all I can say! Normally, that room would be around 50 degrees and we'd fight to get it warm. Now our bedroom is one that we both want to spend time in....I will post pictures when we're totally done with it. Right now it's painted. My husband will be doing all the trim work in the room and then eventually we'll pick out carpet.

We also gutted our horrible looking bathroom! It was just plain sad, let me tell you people! Now, I love it! The walls are a pale green with oak flooring, a new toilet that has the flush button on the top!! Woot! Woot! New vanity and vanity top. We still have to pick out a medicine cabinet, lighting, and finish the drop ceiling. But it already is 100x's better than it was!! We also had the contractor finish the drywall we started in our hallway and utility room. Those are both painted and now my husband just has to finish the floor in there, hang doors, and we'll call it good.

We also had the contractor finish our horrible attempt at drywalling in our front entrance. That is now primered but still needs to be painted and the floor put down. That will happen this spring.

Then the contractor finished our other botch job at the top of our stairs!! We suck at drywall! We can put it up but we have no skills for taping and mudding!! That still has to be primered and so does the upstairs hallway. We'll finish that when my husband has his next 7 days off!!

Needless to say we've been living in chaos for about a month and it has been driving all of us crazy! We were able to make the house look decent for the Christmas tree and we all took Christmas day off to rest and enjoy each others company. It was a lot of hard work but I feel like we really accomplished so much!! I'm proud of my husband...we made a good team!!

Please forgive my absence on your blogs. I will be making my rounds tomorrow because guess what???? I don't have anything pressing to do!! Yippee!!!! Now, I'm off to help my husband put our bed back up. We've been sleeping on a mattress from the camper on our living room floor. I can not wait to crawl into bed tonight!

I love books that take place in China and All the Flowers in Shanghai takes us back to the 1930s introducing the reader to Feng, who becomes the bride of a wealthy businessman in a marriage arranged by her parents.

I still know your face. I see it clearly as it was at the very beginning, not how it was left after I had hurt you.
I did not see the brightness of new life in your eyes when you were born or cradle your warm fleshy body to my breast, and wish now that I had. I wish I had just looked....but I did not let myself because to me you were stillborn. You were not a living person to me then, but an object of hatred, created merely to be beaten and scarred.

'Dreaming of Mr. Darcy' by Victoria Connelly

Fledgling illustrator and Darcy fanatic Kay Ashton settles in the seaside town of Lyme to finish her book, The Illustrated Mr. Darcy, when a film company arrives to make a new adaptation of Persuasion. Kay is soon falling for the handsome bad boy actor playing Captain Wentworth, but it's the quiet screenwriter Adam Craig who has more in common with her beloved Mr. Darcy. Though still healing from a broken heart, Adam finds himself unexpectedly in love with Kay, but it will take more than good intentions to convince her that her real happy ending is with him.

First Thoughts after I finished: "That was completely adorable...bring me more!"

I thought this book was just what the doctor ordered. I was completely captivated by Lyme Regis and the idea of walking in the steps of my beloved author, Jane Austen. The idea of owning a B&B on the coast in England sounds like heaven to me so I immediately connected with the main character, Kay. She comes into some inheritance which allows her to realize some of her dreams. She's besotted with Austen's writing and obsessed with all things Darcy and Captain Wentworth (Persuasion). What could top off owning your own little piece of heaven? Having an adaptation of 'Persuasion' being filmed in Lyme and housing the stars from the film in your own little B&B....did I mention that she had a gorgeous leading man sleeping just a few doors down from her own room? I loved how the author took a little bit of Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Emma made it current and such a fun read! Reading this book has now inspired me to find out more about Lyme Regis, (did you know you can take a tour of Jane's Lyme?????? Sign me up now!) Austen's letters, and of course, to make Persuasion a must read for 2012. I must meet this dashing Captain Wentworth.

Is it possible that he could replace my Mr. Darcy????

I lost count as to how many great reviews I read of this title so I knew that I had to read it and soon!

2.) Reasons you liked or disliked this book

I loved this book! It was so fun to look at the ephemera from days gone by. I would love to actually hold a scrapbook from this time period in my hands today. What a treasure it would be. The pictures from the 1920's are awesome. I love the fashion and the hair. I loved how the author set it up in chapters and allowed the scrapbook to really tell the story. I'm a scrapbooker too and this has helped get me back into the mood of recording the stories of my children and my story too!

3.) Reasons you are recommending this book

I read this one in a couple of hours and found it to be a wonderful way to spend the time. I enjoyed looking at the styles of the day and the quirky slang. My favorite part was when Frankie spent a year in France! For those that love the roaring 20's this book is wonderful. For anyone who likes to journal or scrapbook, this is a sweet reminder of how it all started!!

My selection this week is from a cozy that I picked up at the library last week aptly titled, Books Can Be Deceiving. I haven't been to my library in months, so I was browsing their awesome cozy selection and came up with this one. I plan on reading it over the holiday break.

"Oh, I just love that Maxim de Winter," Violet La Ru said, her knitting needles clicking together as if to emphasize her words. "He gives me the shivers."
"Him?" Nancy Peyton asked. "He's not nearly as scary as Mrs. Danvers."
Lindsey Norris glanced up from her knitting at the two ladies sitting across the circle from her. It was crafternoon Thursday, where member of the crafternoon club gathered at the Briar Creek Library to do a craft- currently, they were knitting- and discuss the assigned book of the week.

First thoughts after I finished: "I want to read more about Nannerl!"

I love books that make me feel as if I have a front row seat to the story and this one delivered in that aspect in every way. I love historical fiction, especially when the author finds such an interesting and real life person such as Nannerl. I hate to admit the fact that I didn't even realize that Mozart had a sister! My heart hurt for her knowing how much she sacrificed over the years. Her father forced her to put her own love and talent for music on the back burner. Instead, Mozart took front and center while she took care of their father until his death. I loved her spirit and how she really became immersed into trying to find out the truth about her brother's death.

Recommend? Nothing intrigues me more than true facts blended with fiction. I was totally immersed into this story and didn't want it to end. You should all know by now that I make a habit of reading "About the book or Afterwards" before diving into the story. I'm always glad that I do because it has really added to my enjoyment of the story. I did what the author suggested and listened to specially selected music. I think it really helped to put me into the mood and captured the time period perfectly. I highly recommend this book to lovers of music, intrigue, mystery and beautifully written historical fiction!

Every once in a while a book comes along that piques my interest enough for me to explore the characters further on my own time. This is one of those stories. Govier has taken real people and painted a life so vivid, so haunting that I felt the need to learn more about Hokusai and his daughter, Oei. At the beginning of the story I honestly had a hard time becoming engaged with the characters and I must admit to being quit turned off by the seedy underbelly of Edo (Tokyo). But as I was reading the story I started to Google the names of paintings and the two main characters. I probably spent about two hours looking at Hokusai's artwork online, reading more information about Oei and poring over the author's website. I can't begin to tell you how much that added to my overall experience and it actually answered a lot of questions I had in regards to courtesans, prostitution in nineteenth-century Japan, shoguns, print blocks, shunga (erotic pictures)/ and everyday life in the early 1800's Japan. I know many readers hesitate to read the Afterward first, but looking back on my experience I wish I would've done that before I started this book. I'm glad that I decided to do some research before moving on with the story. What touched me the most was the bond between father and daughter. They quite literally were married to each other. They spent every waking moment in each other's company and as Hokusai grew older, Oei took care of him when no one else could stand to be in his company. Their connection defied death and Oei's dedication to her father's memory was unprecedented. I also came away from this story with immense admiration for Oei's sense of self. She broke customs by being a more "manly" woman and defied authority on more than one occasion. She tried very hard to stay true to herself even though at times her great artwork was stamped as her father's. I stand in awe of the author's talent for research and how much time she spent acquiring information about Oei. She has woven a story that I am still thinking about today and her story has encouraged me to read more about Hokusai and Oei's legacy.

Recommend? I don't think this book is for everyone, but if you're remotely interested in Japan and its history, especially in regards to the artists that lived during the Edo period, then I would say you would find this to be a very good read. If you're like me and come into this book with no prior knowledge...well, it might fall short of your expectations. For me the saving grace was the information in the back of the book and spending some time doing homework. I might actually read it again just because now I "know" and I feel that the story will be a more cohesive read with those pieces that I didn't quite understand the first time around, dropping nicely into place.

My thoughts: I don't know about you, but for me a good cozy is such a great comfort read. This was my first introduction to JoAnna Carl's writing but it certainly will not be my last. I loved the whole idea of running a chocolate shop (I adore chocolate) and the added plus for me was having the story take place in Michigan. The characters weren't over the top and believe it or not Lee actually did stop herself from recklessly going into danger! Gasp! I know....sometimes cozies make us suspend belief but this one didn't have to do that...and I honestly enjoyed the afternoon I spent while immersed in Warner Pier. The added bonus were the side notes between chapters about chocolate shops within the U.S. that JoAnna has visited while writing this series.

I was browsing at the library a few weeks ago, noticed this book and realized that it was time to read it. I have been putting it off because I didn't want the story to end. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to this fantastic fae world that Moning created and these incredible characters that graced Dublin's streets. This was an epic book both in content and page length. I wondered how long it would take me to read. I shouldn't have worried one bit because as soon as I cracked the spine and settled in, the pages flew like lightning. I read this book in two days and couldn't wait to get back to it whenever I had to set it down. For me this is the what Urban Fantasy is all about- one big kick ass book after another. Few writers can take their readers to such great heights each and every book and continue to deliver each and every time. Moning has crafted a high caliber book which never lets the reader down. I loved all of the twists to the story, the surprises that I never saw coming and most of all the development of her characters. I happily lost myself in this world and didn't want to surface for air.

Recommend? Most definitely...but please make sure that you read this series in order. You will miss out on clues and the building of the story and people if you don't start at the beginning!

First thoughts after finishing this book: "Wow, she did it again! I loved these people and their story!"

Sarah Jio is a very talented and gifted author. All too often the sophomore debut of an author can be a letdown and not show as much promise as the dazzling debut novel. That is NOT the case here, folks. Sarah wrote another home run read for me and my experience was once again off the charts. She has the gift for writing characters that absolutely ring authentic and touched me on a human level. I loved getting to read about the nurses' side of World War II. Too often books are all about the wars and the men who fought them, but this novel gives the reader a glimpse into what may have inspired a young woman to sign up for nursing duty out in the Pacific Ocean. I loved her complex characters that at first glance may seem come across as very simplistic, but if you peel away that outer glossy coat, the reader was able to see into their hearts.

Recommend? Absolutely, with no hesitation. I couldn't put this story down and finished it over the course of two days. I'm a sucker for a book that starts off with someone finding a long lost letter....you just never know where it will take you!

This book would be an excellent Christmas gift for someone who loves historical fiction that encompasses WWII and the present day.

I am the family historian. I'm the one who spends hours on Ancestry.com and has researched both sides of my family endlessly. With that responsibility comes all of the family pictures. I love spending time looking at my loved ones faces when they were young. These two men are my grandfathers. I was looking at their photos the other day when I noticed that they're both wearing hats, something you just don't see much any longer. I thought it would make for a great Saturday Snapshot. These photos were taken some time in the mid-30's.

My Thoughts: I picked the perfect time to read this book...when the weather gets a bit cooler and I long for the days of summer. The author did a great job creating these characters because I felt a kindred spirit with each one of them. I am a huge fan of strong female women and this story has them tenfold. What struck me the most is that even though they had lost all of their money they were not going to settle for crumbs. They put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the renovation of the beachfront home and were able to reap the rewards of hard work. If you're a fan of stories that encompass women's friendships, hardships, secrets and hope, then this may be a good read for you!

My selection for this week is The Bungalow by Sarah Jio. I absolutely adored her debut novel, The Violets of March, in fact it is one of my top ten reads for 2011. I've been following Sarah on Facebook where I first read about her upcoming release. When she emailed me with the gracious offer of reading her book via NetGalley I jumped...quite literally I might add, at the chance to read it.

Tuck a slip of paper into a flimsy envelope, seal it with a swipe of the tongue, then send it on its way. That letter might be handled by dozens of people and journey a thousand miles before reaching the intended mailbox, where it nestles anonymously between pages twenty-nine and thirty of some unwanted catalog, lying in wait for its unsuspecting recipient, who tosses the catalog, with its treasure tucked inside, into the recycle bin with flick of the wrist. There, next to poorly rinsed milk cartons, an empty wine bottle, and yesterday's newspaper, a life-changing piece of mail quietly awaits.

That letter was for me.

It's Drama time once again in the Taylor house. Last night was opening night for the school's production of The Canterbury Tales. Marc was in 2 of the tales. He played the rooster Chanticleer, in the Nun's Tale. I can't even begin to tell you fantastic he was...that boy is not afraid of anything! He was then Palamon in the Knight's Tale. It was a fantastic play! The costumes and stage were fantastic and all of the kids did a wonderful job. Here are two of the pics from the night. Enjoy!

'Miss Darcy Falls in Love' by Sharon Lathan

Noble young ladies were expected to play an instrument, but societal restrictions would have chafed for Georgiana Darcy, and accomplished musician. Her tour of Europe draws the reader into the musical life of the day, and a riveting love story of a young woman learning to direct her destiny and understand her own heart.

First thoughts after finishing this book: To quote Georgiana,-"I am wildly and wantonly satisfied."

I'm really glad that I took the chance to read a Lathan book again. Earlier this year I read one of her books and felt the sex was the story and there really wasn't a plot. Well, I'm glad to say that I think the author has listened to her readers and pulled back on the over-the-top sex. None of that really happens until the end of the book and it occurs exactly where and when it should. This time Sharon has taken the time to flesh out her characters and really bring them to life. I really enjoyed Georgiana's story and am thankful that Lathan decided to spend some time with this intriguing person. One of the most unique features in this story is the how music is used. I loved how passionate Georgiana was about writing and playing her own original music. I also enjoyed experiencing France through the eyes of a young lady who is touring Europe during the Regency time period. The beginning did start out a bit slow for me but after about 30 pages the story really took off and came to a very satisfying conclusion.

Recommend? For my fellow P&P variation readers, this is one that you MUST add to your reading list and/or stacks of books. You won't be disappointed and may end up with the same opinion as me- I want more books that feature the minor characters from Pride and Prejudice.

'Breaking the Code: a Father's Secret, a Daughter's Journey, and the Question That Changed Everything'

On his 81st birthday, without explanation, Karen Alaniz's father placed two weathered notebooks on her lap. Inside were more than 400 pages of letters he'd written to his parents during WWII. She began reading them, and the more she read, the more she discovered about the man she never knew and the secret role he played in WWII. They began to meet for lunch every week, for her to ask him questions, and him to provide the answers. And with painful memories now at the forefront of his thoughts, her father began to suffer, making their meetings as much about healing as discovery.

First thoughts after finishing this book: The quiet ones usually have the best stories to tell!

This book couldn't have been read at a better time with Veteran's Day being celebrated and with me watching Lisa Ling's latest installment of "Our America: Invisible Wounds of War." Both the book and the documentary left me with conflicting feelings and a heavy heart. Most of you know that my oldest is a Marine. I'm so very proud of his accomplishments to-date and for his service to our wonderful country. Yet, as I read this book and watched the documentary I realized that it all comes with a hefty price tag. The author's father never really talked about his experience during WWII so she was caught off-guard when he gave her several notebooks filled with the letters he penned to his parents while serving in Hawaii. Little did she know what reading those letters and then asking her father questions would set off. Her father at times would freely give her information, but more often than not he would become angry and deny taking part in any type of combat. Revisiting those letters caused him to come to terms with his grief, anger, hurt, and hopelessness over the images he witnessed and the covert operations that he was a part of. Back then they called it shell shock. Now we call it PTSD. The book made me sad at times and the documentary really reinforced to me what the author's father experienced. I have since then found myself at war with my own feelings about the military, serving our country, and the broken men and women that are coming home. An average of 18 veterans commit suicide daily....it is becoming an epidemic. And as a mother, I do not want my son to experience combat. I don't want my son to become hopeless. I don't want my son or anyone else's son or daughter to become a part of that statistic. I never really thought of those who came and fought before us...it's history, but this book made me realize that being a soldier then and now isn't really that much different. War is ugly and it leaves hideous scars on those that survive.

Recommend? I would highly recommend this book to those that have or had a family member who served and may have experienced combat. The author gave us glimpses into her father's world by highlighting some of his letters and then delving into certain incidences while having her weekly breakfast with her Dad. I loved reading his first-hand reports of Hawaii and I thought she really let his personality shine through this story. As each day ends we lose more and more of our WWII Vets....we need to get their stories down on paper before there is no one left to tell the tale.

First thoughts after finishing this book: "Um....can I find a vending machine filled with HOT cowboys?"

I love me some buff, hot, testosterone dripping, alpha male COWBOY! Was that bit over the top? Ha! Let me just say that this book was a great one to pick up after reading the emotionally draining Cross Currents. I was able to lose myself in Lacey and Chase's love story. I know that on more than one occasion I had that stupid look on my face that I get when I'm reading a very steamy love scene....and there were plenty of those in this book. But, I found them all to be right in line with the attraction between Lacey and Chase. It wasn't cheap sex...and it was very well written. There was more to the story than just what was going on between the sheets and that is why I really enjoyed this one.

Recommend? If you enjoy romance with brawny, sexy cowboys (who wouldn't..did you check out that cover?) and a good love story to boot (pun intended) then I would tell you to grab this one. Make sure that you're reading it when no one else is around..I got busted two times during lunch reading this book. Both times my friend knew that I was reading a hot love scene. How you say? That stupid grin I get when the story is heating up and I'm loving the details! I'm going to read them all, but alone, locked in my room with no one around...except my husband! (insert devil grin!)

Rating: 8/10 (rating for excellent sex scenes and a story that kept me engaged)

Synopsis:

But trouble looms when Patch's brother, Ryan, arrives, accompanied by his beautiful girlfriend, Brooke. Lek leanrs that Patch is running from the law, and his mere presence puts Lek's family at risk. Meanwhile, Brooke begins to doubt her love for Ryan, while her feelings for Patch blossom. The two brothers, once inseparable, clash over a choice that could alter their lives. In a glorious landscape of sea and sky, where nature's bounty seems endless, these two families are caught in the cross currents of conflict and change- and swept up in an approaching cataclysm that will require all their strength of heart and souls to survive.

First thoughts when I finished this magnificent novel: "I'm a damn emotional wreck!"

I have to say that I'm blown away by Shors writing. I could kick myself for waiting so long to experience his talent but now that I have, I will be reading all of his books. I'm amazed at how he was able to lull me into this sense of peace and beauty. I could imagine myself on the beach in Ko Phi Phi. I could smell the wonderful food that Sarai made for her guests and family. I could hear the children's laughter and the gentle ribbing that Sarai's mother would do to her on a daily basis. Shors made me care about each and every person that he created. I loved Patch and felt myself drawn to this gentle soul. I could also understand Patch's brother, Ryan. Being a first-born myself, I have always felt the pressure to be the perfect child, and of course, my brother's protector. So page after page, I was drawn deeper and deeper into these character's lives and then I knew that the inevitable was going to happen because I'd come to that chapter. The one that would unleash the terror of that horrible day (Tsunami in Thailand)...but I had to read on and experience their disbelief, shock, hurt, and sacrifice.

Recommend? With no hesitations whatsoever. This book made me experience so many emotions...I can't begin to tell you or adequately express how I felt while reading this book. All I can say is that I broke down and cried as if my heart had been broken. I cried for these characters and for the real people that had to go through that day of hell. If you've never read John Shors this is a great place to start. His words convey emotions, pictures, and so much more....I'm in love with his storytelling.
