Leap Year
Released Jan 2010
Source: Checked out from my library for .75 cents
My husband watched this one before me and thought there was no chemistry between the leading man and woman, so I was prepared to be disappointed. Well, amazingly enough I thought this was a cute movie. I have this thing for Ireland so I'm sure that played a huge role in my enjoyment. I have to admit that I ended up with a bit of a crush on the Irish barkeeper. The love story was o.k. but not that believable to me. I would totally recommend that you rent this DVD..not worth the $$ to own.

The Time Traveler's Wife
Released: 2009

I have avoided watching this movie for a full year because I LOVED the book so much that I just did not want to be disappointed. Well, I was!!! The first part of the movie was incredibly slow and if you hadn't read the book, you would be wondering just what the heck was going on. I had to explain a few things to my husband as we watched this. The last 45 minutes were saved by the introduction of Alba....she made the movie for me. This movie didn't elicit very many emotions for me and that in my book makes it nothing to write home about!
My Rating: Alba raised this from a 2 to a 3
It's Complicated

OMG.....I absolutely loved loved loved this movie!! Meryl Streep just gets better with age and for once I really enjoyed Alec Baldwin. I enjoyed watching how this story played out and thought there was real chemistry between all of the actors. I believed everyone. I cried right at the beginning of the movie where Meryl's character walks back into her empty house and wonders what she's going to do now that her children are grown and flying the coop. This is one movie that I would watch again!!!
My Rating:
Sounds like I need to move It's Complicated to the TOP of my Netflix queue!
ReplyDeleteYour library charges for DVDs? We just have to pay if we keep it over 7 days.
ReplyDeleteI wondered about It's Complicated. I'm going to see if I can rent that, too. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteNetflix sent Leap Year in time for a weekend my parents visited us. We all watched it together and thought it was cute. Agreed: not much chemistry and thought the barkeeper was adorable. Sidenote: I've been to Ireland a couple of times (my parents were also along for the trips) - you must go, Staci!!!
ReplyDeleteI have not seen Leap Year, but I have seen the Time Traveler's Wife and did not think it was a good movie. I am sure the book had to be a lot better. It's Complicated was an OK movie too, mainly because it was Meryl Streep. I mean any movie with her in it is going to have something to like. I loved the party scene when she was high, very funny. Thanks for the reviews.
ReplyDeleteThe Streep movie sounds terrific! 5 stars, holy cow, I better get that one on "the list". Glad you enjoyed it so much. Kinda makes up for the others being mediocre.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe we haven't seen It's Complicated yet, although I just checked and it is in our Netflix queue, we're just not there yet! It's very hard to find a bad Meryl Streep movie!
ReplyDeleteBoth of my daughters absolutely loved the Time Traveler's Wife, but I also would rate it only a 3 (mostly because the time travel aspect of the story was a bit outside my comfort zone).
ReplyDeleteYou have confirmed my initial impression of It's Complicated - and now I know I must rent the movie ASAP
I'm glad to see that you liked It's Complicated so much. I'm going to have to either get that one from the library or netflix.
ReplyDeleteI started watching the timetrav. but yes so slow!! Oh and I don't wanna see the end :(
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVED this movie, too...so much that I did buy it. And you're right. For once, Alec Baldwin was not someone I totally hated. And Meryl Streep does get better and better.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a single Meryl Streep movie that I didn't adore. I have many of her films, going way back to Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, and Heartburn. I'm sure I have more!
I even loved Mama Mia because of her. And who doesn't want to sing along with Abba?
Okay, I guess I've gone on and one long enough. But now I want to go watch this movie again!
My daughter and I almost rented Leap Year last night but skipped it in favor of Valentine's Day. Which I would rate about the same as you rated Leap Year. I'd completely forgotten about It's Complicated but then I doubt it's one she would enjoy. Think that's one to save for a time when the hubby and I sit down to watch a movie.
ReplyDeleteMy friend recommended It's Complicated, but I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet. She loved it too.
ReplyDeleteMeryl can do no wrong. period. :):):):):):) awesome reviews staci! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
ReplyDeleteI saw It's Complicated at the movies and loved it so much I've since watched it again on DVD (something I rarely do) :-)
ReplyDeletePS love the new look!
My daughter read TTTW and then went to see the movie she was so disappointed! I think I will be passing on the movie. I am going to check my son's netflix and put It's Complicated in his queue.
ReplyDeleteI have Leap Year and It's Complicated in my Netflix queue. I'll push them both higher on my queue.
ReplyDeleteThe Girl and I both thought Leap Year was cute, mainly because that actor is cute. ;)
ReplyDeleteI saw the last hour of the Time Traveler's Wife the other night. I haven't read the book and I was confused here and there (probably because I didn't see the beginning) but it still made me cry at the end. I also loved Alba!
I haven't yet seen any of these. I had the chance to watch The Time Traveler's Wife this weekend but passed on it since I still haven't gotten around to reading the book. One of these days . . .
ReplyDeleteI saw the first two and had much the same reaction as you. I REALLY want to see It's Complicated. Thanks for reminding me!
ReplyDeleteI may still watch TTTW simply because I was curious to see how they would show certain things from the book in movie "reality" such as the random time travel appearances and aging and whether the true romance could be captured properly. Sounds as if that is not the case. Some books are just better left to the movies we make in our own heads.
