Six Sentence Saturday

 Welcome to Six Sentence Saturday.
Where I try to express my thoughts on recent reads using only 6 sentences!!!!.
At the end of each review I will post a
rating scale of 1-5 using the cute and original (lol) Playing Cards.
Rating scale will be as follows:

5 of Hearts- You must read this book NOW!!
4 of Hearts- A great read, put it on your TBR list.
3 of Hearts- Glad I read but no big deal

2 of Hearts- Why did I finish this?
Joker Card - Don't bother (why did I?)

The Girl Who Chased the Moon- Sarah Addison Allen
Allen is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I  devoured this book in a day and loved every minute that I spent in Mullaby, North Carolina. I did however, find myself drawn more to Julia's story rather than Emily's. I could relate to Julia's heartbreak and feelings of unworthiness. I found myself getting a bit emotional when it came to Julia and her need to bake......loved the connection between food and love. The magic in the story was a little on the cheesy side, but not enough for me to not love this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Rating: (actually a 4.5)

A Bride Most Begrudging - Deeanne Gist
Some may think that Christian fiction is the same as reading the Bible or having religion forced down your throat...well, I want to tell you that this couldn't be further from the truth. The faith that the characters reflect is actually very appropriate for the times. It is the 1600s, colonial Virginia, strained relationships with Indians, and death is an every day occurrence. Not to have some sort of faith would totally seem out of place. This book worked for me in so many ways....I loved Constance and Drew, though at times I could have smacked both of them, but their growing love for each other was a wonderful thing to experience. Reading this book really made me appreciate our history, the ones that came before us, and taught me a great history lesson (one that I never learned in high school) in regards to tobacco brides and how they came to be in the blossoming colonies.
My Rating: (4.5 actually!)

Love Comes Softly- Janette Oke
I spent an entire day and evening watching the series, Love Comes Softy, on the Hallmark Channel a few weeks ago. I knew immediately that I had to read these books. There are times when I crave nothing more than a simple story about people, their hardships, their faith, and the love that they share. This book has all of that and more. I truly admire our ancestors that lived during the early 1800s and who were brave enough to venture into the unexplored west. After turning the last page, my appreciation for those that came before me increased tenfold and my heart was enveloped within the pages of Matty and Clark Davis' love story.

My Rating: (4.5)

  4. I just finished The Girl Who Chased The Moon this morning and just loved it! I liked Julia's story better too. Some of the magic may be a little cheesy but that is the charm of Allen's books. Garden Spells was really good too if you haven't read that one. Have a good weekend and happy Easter.

  7. I don't mind Christian fiction's being evangelizing, I just think they have predictable plots--there's always some kind of redemption or repentance and on to a happy ending.

  9. Looks like 3 good books. I wouldn't mind reading something from Deanne Gist one of these days. I agree that Julia's story was a good one. I would have liked to have it more developed as well but that went for the whole book in my opinion. I needed way more of it!

  14. That "Love Comes Softly" looks like a really good book. I wish I had the time to read. With school and my externship, I don't have time to read anymore. When the program is over in the summer, I will be able to breathe again.

I hope all is well with you my friend. HAPPY EASTER to you, your hubby, and kids!

  21. I agree with you on Christian fiction, everything that I have read has been really good and not shoving it down your throat at all.

I am not religious, but get really tired of gratuitous sex scenes in books. Christian fiction is perfect for me on this aspect!
