Weekly Geeks #5- Cover Art

Judge a Book By Its Cover!

This week it's all about judging books by their covers! Pick a book--any book, really--and search out multiple book cover images for that book. They could span a decade or two (or more)...Or they could span several countries. Which cover is your favorite? Which one is your least favorite? Which one best 'captures' what the book is about?

Well, I wanted to post the cover to the two books that truly influenced me to be the reader that I am today: Charlotte's Web and The Little House on the Prairie. The only problem is that the cover does not have very many different editions. So I decided to post Little Women instead. I love this book and can never pass up the opportunity to watch the movie version that Katherine Hepburn starred in...She is Jo!!

The first one I'm not that crazy about, it shows Beth in her sick bed and I just think it's kind of bland. I do like the second cover. I would pick this book up and see what the story was about.

Sometimes I like movie covers on books but this is not the case for this edition. I do however love the second book cover!!

Well a lot can be said for book covers that is for sure. Some covers I spot from across the room and instantly attract my attention, while others I wonder why in the world they chose that particular art/photo to express what this book is about. I know that I shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I have to be honest and say that I do, and I do it a lot!! So far I don't feel that it has been a hindrance in regards to choosing a good read or not. I will always go with my initial gut reaction and then see where it leads me!!

And on a side note: the book that I own of Little Women is extremely old and tattered, there is no cover art on the front, but it has the most beautiful color pictures within the covers!! I found it in a library sale!!

  2. OMG - Laura Ingalls was my best friend growing up (as was Nancy Drew) and I hated that nasty Nellie Olson!! I love your choices, and it's amazing to see the changes in the covers. :)

  5. I haven't read Little Women, but I have seen the movie--at least the one with Winona Ryder. I'll have to look for the Katherine Hepburn version.

I tend to care for books with movie covers on them and will go out of my way to buy the one without it, even if it costs more--most of the time anyway.

Sometimes I pick up a book in the bookstore to take a closer look because of a cover that catches my eye. I think it's natural to be influenced at least a little by presentation. :-)

  7. I love Little Women. Despite its length, it was one of my favorites as a kid. My edition has a drawing of the girls all gathered around the piano, but not one of the ones you pictured here.

Love the book, but HATE the movie. I don't usually like movies made from books, and I wasn't impressed with the Winona Ryder version. Although I haven't seen the version you mention. When I was in junior high or high school, my mom took my sister and I to see a stage play of the book. Now THAT was cool.

  11. You know which one I thought of.."The Thorn Birds". They have the normal cover and then the cover with Fr Ralph & Meggie on it. I am such a heathen! I like the one with the couple on the cover! LOL!

So I guess I do judge a book by its cover too!

For your choices I liked the 4th one.

  13. I'd give a lot to have my early pb copy of LW with KH and the others on the cover. Jean Parker as Beth just personified her, I thought, and the woman who played Meg was perfect beyond words - I looked her up - Frances Dee. Joan Bennett as Amy was fine, but honestly it's the others whose faces on my cover I remember all these years later. Coincidentally, Staci, I just changed my blog header today and one of the books on the shelf is my other childhood copy of LW which my mom gave me when I was 11. I'm so happy I still have that one because she wrote inside it.

  14. I often ponder why certain covers were chosen for a book. Quite often I like the UK cover for a book better than the US cover. Why are they different? In some cases the title of the book is even different.
